TOPEKA, Kan. - The Kansas State High School Activities Association Board of Directors voted in favor of a proposal which address the classification rule providing a success modifier for private member schools within the KSHSAA, Friday afternoon. With a vote of 43-19, the proposal will now be voted on by each member school.
The ballots will be sent to each school in May. In order for the proposal to progress in the legislative process, a majority of all schools affected and a majority of all classes affected must vote in favor. In this instance, all 355 member high schools and all six classes are affected.
If the proposal does pass the above criteria then the Kansas State Board of Education will then review and approve the proposed language. This must be done since the proposal would alter the KSHSAA’s current bylaws.
From there, the Kansas State Legislature would then examine a statute change that could allow the KSHSAA to classify differently than the current statute: “Establish a system for the classification of member high schools according to student attendance.” (KSA 2014 SUPP 72-7114 (5))
