For the third time in the last four years, K-State shocked sixth-ranked Oklahoma. The Wildcats put up 41 points against one of the best defenses in the country after being statistically one of the worst offenses in the country. K-State won by a final score of 41-34.

On the first drive of the game, K-State quarterback Adrian Martinez looked like a completely different quarterback. He was throwing deep passes over the middle and the offense moved the ball quickly into the redzone. On 1st & Goal, Martinez kept it on an option read and scored to put K-State up 7-0.

OU’s offense led by junior quarterback Dillon Gabriel moved quickly on their first possession, but only got one first down and were forced to punt.

K-State kept their momentum going with another good drive including a 25-yard reception to tight end Ben Sinnott. It was capped off by a touchdown reception from wide receiver Malik Knowles on a quick slant from the six-yard line to put them up 14-0.

Gabriel got the Sooners on the board with a 56-yard touchdown to wide receiver Theo Wease with a blown coverage in the secondary.

After stops by both teams, OU struck again with wide receiver Marvin Mims Jr. finally making his presence felt by hauling in a 50-yard touchdown pass to even the score 14-14.

On the ensuing kickoff, OU made the mistake of letting Knowles return a kickoff, and he made them pay as he returned it all the way to the Sooner 42-yard line.

Martinez and running back Deuce Vaughn did almost all of the work with the Cats converting on a 4th and inches inside the five-yard line on a QB sneak, and Martinez capped it off with a three-yard touchdown run to go up 21-14.

Gabriel consistently found holes in the Wildcats’ secondary and carved them up in the following drive. However, the lynch mob held the Sooners to a 41-yard field goal by OU kicker by Zach Schmit.

K-State’s offense then marched down the field with little resistance from OU’s defense with some chunk plays from Martinez. The Sooners held the Wildcats to a 23-yard Chris Tennant field goal as the clock expired. K-State led at the half 24-17.

The Sooners started the second half with the ball in a critical drive. They were able to get some good runs from their transfer running back Eric Gray, but they were held to a Schmit 44-yard field goal.

K-State got a solid drive going with some lengthy runs by Vaughn and the freshman DJ Giddens with some timely completions to get them in the redzone, but they once again stalled and Tennant was asked to make a 29-yard field goal in which he delivered.

The Wildcat defense got a crucial fourth down stop to quickly get the ball back, but they were unable to do anything with it which led to the end of the third quarter. K-State held on to a 27-20 lead going into the final frame.

After both teams had empty possessions, offensive coordinator Collin Klein relied on Martinez’s arm to lead them down the field despite the game script telling them to run. After a pass-heavy start to the drive, Martinez got into the endzone with his legs for a third time to get the Cats up to a 34-20 lead.

Now playing with fire under their feet, Oklahoma needed a quick score trailing by two possessions with less than eight minutes left. They did just that, but it took some time. Gabriel flipped a pass to Braden Willis after bobbling the snap which made the score 34-27 with 4:36 to go.

After all of its previous failures in the first three games, it was Martinez and the K-State offense that needed to make some plays, and they did it. On 3rd and 16, 9AM tucked and ran it for 55 yards. He followed that spectacular play by sealing the deal with his fourth rushing touchdown (with a bow to the crowd) to give them a 41-27 advantage.

K-State notoriously surrenders late, meaningless touchdowns and this game was no different as Gabriel connected with Willis again to make it 41-34. The Wildcats fielded the onside kick and Martinez took the knee to officially clinch it.

Martinez went 21-for-34 with a season high 234 passing yards with a passing touchdown. He also had career highs in rushing yards (154) and rushing touchdowns (4) on 21 carries.

Vaughn had 25 carries with 116 rushing yards. Tight end Ben Sinnott led all pass catchers with four catches for 80 yards. Wide receiver Phillip Brooks led the team with eight receptions with 56 receiving yards.

The Wildcats’ offense had 509 total yards and more importantly, they went 8-for-17 on third downs and 2-for-2 on fourth downs after being woeful in both categories last week versus Tulane.

Saturday’s win was the second straight time they left Norman with a victory, and the fourth time in the last six tries dating back to 2012.

Oklahoma falls to 3-1 in the regular season and 0-1 in Big 12 play. They go to Arlington next Saturday to face the Horned Frogs after they won in Dallas against geographical rival SMU, 42-34.

Head coach Chris Klieman is now 3-1 against the Sooners. K-State is now 3-1, also, on the regular season and 1-0 in Big 12 play. They host Texas Tech next Saturday at 11:00 a.m. The Red Raiders won in overtime against Texas in Lubbock 37-34.

Pregame coverage will start at 9:00 a.m. and can be heard on KNZA 103.9 FM and KMZA 92.1 FM.
