Hiawatha Sweeps Troy in Basketball Doubleheader

The Hiawatha basketball teams picked up a pair of wins on Tuesday night at Troy in a battle of the Big 7 versus the Twin Valley League. 

Girls: Hiawatha 43, Troy 33

The Lady Redhawks got a big night from Darcy Lierz as she led all scorers with 25 points while also adding six rebounds in the win. 

Both teams had dominant quarters in the first half as Hiawatha controlled the pace in the first quarter as they outscored the Trojans 16-4. 

Troy battled all the way back in the second quarter as they outscored the Redhawks 15-3 to tie the game at 19-19 going into halftime. 

The Redhawks would pull away for the win in the second half as they outscored Troy 24-14 including 9-4 in the fourth quarter. 

Josie Delaney was also in double figures for the Redhawks as she finished with 10. Troy was led in scoring by Harper Whetstine with 10 while Cayley Grable and Paityn Engemann each added eight points. 

Redhawks improve to 2-0 while the Trojans drop to 0-2. 

Boys: Hiawatha 55, Troy 53

Troy jumped out to an early 12-4 lead but the Redhawks would battle back with a 12-0 run to close the first quarter and led 16-12 after the first eight minutes. 

The rest of the game was tight as Troy led 28-25 at halftime and 40-35 going into the fourth quarter. 

The Redhawks outscored the Trojans 20-13 in the fourth quarter and was able to hold off the Trojans for the win. 

Hiawatha turned it over 31 times but hit 21 of 35 free throws and outrebounded Troy 35-28. The Trojans had 13 turnovers in the game and was only 3 of 7 at the free throw line. 

The Redhawks were led by Cameron Boswell with 17 points while Kaden Morton posted a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Ashton Rockey was also in double figures with 10 as he went 10 of 14 at the free throw line. 

Troy was led in scoring by Reagan Hartman with 14 points while Seth Judd added nine. Boden Benitz and Preston Christenson each added eight. 

Redhawks pick up their first win of the season while Troy lost their first game as they both go into their next games with 1-1 records. 

Next up for both, Hiawatha travels to Centralia while Troy heads to Blue Valley.
