Big 7 All League Basketball Honors Announced

With the basketball season in the rear view mirror the all league and class state teams will be announced over the next few weeks.

It was another great year in the Big Seven league once more with it's eight current teams, which will change to 10 teams next year with the additions of ACCHS and Riverside. But this season was full of great games and great plays by many key players for each team.

Holton lead the way on the first team all league honors with six players, three girls and three boys earning first team honors and one more earning honorable mention honors. For the Holton boys they capped off their season 17-5 and 13-1 in the league to share the league title this season for the second straight year with Nemaha Valley. Wildcats were lead by seniors, Tyler Burdiek and Trent Tanking who averaged 14.5 ppg and 13 ppg to lead the team. Sophomore, Garett Beecher also earned first team honors while averagingn 9.5 ppg this year. Senior, Cameron Karn garnered honorable mention honors while posting 9.1 ppg on the season.

For the Holton girls they capped off another Big Seven league title this year finishing 21-2 on the season with their only to losses to Wamego, the eventually Class 4A state champion. Lady Wildcats continued their dominance in the Big Seven league with an eighth straight league crown, all undefeated league seasons. Junior, Krystie Miller lead the way for the Wildcats on the season with 11.5 ppg earning first all league honors. Joining Miller on the first team were seniors, Brylee New and Connor Strader who posted 6.8 and 7.9 ppg, respectively on the season.

After Holton, it was Nemaha Valley, Sabetha and Santa Fe Trail each having four players earning first team all league honors.

Sabetha Bluejays had two boys and two girls earn first team honors, while two more boys earned honorable mention honors. Senior, McKenzie McAfee lead the Bluejays this year with 11.9 ppg while junior, Gaven Schuman added 8.5 ppg on the season, both helping the Bluejays to a 14-8 season and earning first team all league honors. Senior, Derrick Duncan and junior, Jacob Frey both earned honorable mention honors for the Bluejays.

For the Lady Bluejays they punched their ticket to the state tournament this season finishing the year 17-7 and were lead by a senior and freshman on the season who both earned first team all league honors. Senior, Ashley Annan lead the lady Bluejays who averaged 14 ppg and 9 rpg on the season, while freshman, Alexis McAfee posted 11.5 ppg on the year.

For the Nemaha Valley Raiders the boys capped off another top four finish in Class 3A at state this season finishing third this year at state and tallying a 24-2 record on the year. Raiders were lead all season by senior tandem, Creighton Brinker and Trent Olberding. Brinker averaged nearly 15 ppg to lead the lead and posted 8 rpg while leading the leading in blocks, too. Olberding put up 12.1 ppg on the year for the Raiders providing true leadership. Junior, Caleb Meyer joined Brinker and Olberding with first team all league honors after starting this year for the Raiders and posting 9.3 ppg.

The lady Raiders of Nemaha Valley had a great season themselves making the sub-state championship game and winning the Hiawatha Invitational this season, capping off the season with a 14-9 record. Sophomore, Jaci Swart helped lead the lady Raiders all season with 7.9 ppg and 3.8 apg which lead the league, all which help earn her first team all league honors. Senior, Ashley Rottinghaus who scored 7 ppg this season earned honorable mention honors.

For Santa Fe Trail the girls finished second in the league behind Holton with a 17-5 overall record and were lead by juniors, Shelby Dahl and Amber Moore along with senior, Holly Ullery, who were the top three scorers for the Chargers on the season, earning them spots on the all league team. Boys were lead by Tyler Shaffer this season who posted 11.9 ppg lead the charge for the Chargers all season, earning him first team honors.

Jeff West was they only other school to have both a first team all leaguer on the girls and boys team with one player earning honors on the each the girls and boys team. Junior, Teal Watts came on late in the season and provided a huge spark for the Tigers averaging 10.1 ppg and leading the league in steals, 3.5 per game this season. Senior, Erika Essman also earned first team all league honors as she posted 12 ppg to lead the Tigers on the court this season. Tiger seniors, Molly Hothan and Cory Brown both earned honorable mention all league honors, also for Jeff West.

Royal Valley senior, Mara Winter also earned first team honors after being the rock for the Panthers this season in a struggling year, posting 10 ppg. A pair of Panther boys in senior, Thomas Broxterman and junior, Skyler Link both earned honorable mention all-league honors.

Both Hiawatha and Perry Lecompton had struggling seasons on the court but were lead by some top players in the league who earned honorable mention all league honors. For the Redhawks junior, Connor Bigham and freshman, Emily Gartner grabbed the honors, while juniors, Zach Linquist and Kai Jones nabbed the honors for the Kaws.

While many seniors, were top performers this year in the Big Seven to help provide for another great year in the league there were plenty of underclassman earning all league honors, also setting up for another great basketball year next season.
