The Troy girls basketball team concluded play at the 12th Annual Thunder Classic on Friday afternoon with a third-place finish, defeating host Nemaha Central 50–37.
Troy opened the tournament with a 58–49 victory over Marysville in the quarterfinals before falling to Class 4A No. 7 Rock Creek, 58–33, in the semifinals. Nemaha Central advanced to the semifinals with a 56–44 win over Jackson Heights but was defeated by Class 3A No. 5 Hiawatha, 47–33.
In the third-place game, the Trojans pulled away in the second half, outscoring the Thunder 25–15 after taking a narrow three-point lead into halftime.
Harper Whetstine delivered an outstanding performance throughout the tournament, scoring 31 points against Marysville, 19 against Rock Creek, and finishing with 22 points and eight rebounds in the win over Nemaha Central. Hailey Groff added 11 points in the final game and also captured the three-point contest title, which featured several strong perimeter shooters.
Nemaha Central entered the tournament riding an eight-game winning streak that was snapped by Hiawatha in the semifinals. In the loss to Troy, the Thunder were led by Kennedy McKee with nine points, while Emma Hermesch and Bailey Snyder each added eight. Caroline Nordhus contributed seven points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
