The Sabetha boys basketball team earned a 55-45 victory over Nemaha Central in a Class 3A Sub-State Quarterfinal matchup.
Sabetha opened the scoring with a steal and score from Reid Mitchell, but quickly fell behind 10-4 early in the first quarter. The Bluejays trailed 28-26 at halftime after outscoring Nemaha Central 19-18 in the second quarter. Sophomore Kyson Wertenberger sparked Sabetha in the period with seven points, including one of the team’s two three-pointers in the quarter.
Sabetha took control in the third quarter, outscoring the Thunder 16-8 to seize momentum. The Bluejays carried a 42-36 lead into the fourth quarter and pulled away to secure their third win over Nemaha Central this season, 55-45.
Wertenberger led Sabetha with 14 points, followed closely by Jack Frazee with 13. For Nemaha Central, Kalem Schmelze fouled out in the fourth quarter but finished with 10 points, all coming in the second half. Both teams connected on four three-pointers, while the Bluejays went 15-of-22 from the free-throw line.
Sabetha will face the Silver Lake Eagles next Tuesday at Silver Lake, with tipoff set for 6:00 p.m. Coverage will be provided by the Silver Lake channel.
