The Atchison boys basketball team opened the Class 4A State Tournament on Wednesday afternoon at Kansas City KS Community College with a 73-53 win over McPherson.
The game was tight in the first half with McPherson taking a 28-27 lead into the halftime break.
The third quarter was all Atchison as they blew the game open powered by a 23-4 run.
Junior Jeremiah Thompson led all scorers in the game with 29 points. Kael Williams added 13 points while Yogi Purdy chipped in with 12 points.
The Phoenix shot nearly 60% from the field in the game which included a staggering 83% from the floor in the third quarter.
The Phoenix improved to 26-0 on the season and are one of just four teams across the entire state still undefeated fighting for a state championship.
Atchison will face Baldwin on Friday night at 7:30 PM in the 4A semifinals with the game at the Hutchinson Sports Arena in Hutchinson. Live coverage on both 103.9 KNZA & KAIR 93.7.
