Hiawatha won despite Royal Valley pulling within one with 5:30 left in the game with a touchdown. A player for Royal Valley hit a Hiawatha player while celebrating after the possible game-tying touchdown, and as a result they were penalized on the PAT, which they missed. The win makes it the third time in the last four seasons that Hiawatha has won their season opener. It's also the fourth consecutive time they've beaten Royal Valley.
