Listen back to 4A-DII Regional Semifinals 103.9 KNZA broadcast - Hayden vs Holton

It was 4A Division Two Softball Regionals on Monday at Hayden High School in Topeka and although Big 7 League teams Jeff West and Holton had four run leads going into the fifth inning, both teams would see their season end with an upset loss in the last frame of their semifinal.

Rock Creek 14, Jeff West 8

It was a back and forth game through the first few innings until #2 seed Jeff West scored five runs on five hits in the third to take an 8-4 lead.  However the Tiger bats faded in the blazing hot afternoon and Brynn Hammett retired the last 11 batters she faced and the Mustangs plated two tallies both the fifth and sixth innings to tie the score then erupted for six runs in the seventh for the win.

The Rock Creek offense pounded out 22 hits on the day with seven players registering multi-hit efforts.  Jayden Weers went 4-5 and Brook Dillon also had four hits while Olivia Lee had a trio of hits and RBI and Jocline Eichem went 3-5 as well.

Jeff West (11-6) tied the game at two with a home run by Kaileigh Wright in the first inning and took a 3-2 lead in the second as Tayler Metzger tripled and scored on a hit by Kiley Bilthoff.  Piper Davis had a two-run double to key the Tigers five run third inning and Metzger and Zoe Holthaus also had RBI base knocksin the frame.  Yet, Jeff West couldn't get a base runner in their final 11 at bats of the contest.  Faith Becker pitched six and a third innings in the loss and did not surrender a walk or strike out a batter.

Hayden 7, Holton 6

It was a hot start for the #1 seed Holton girls who scored three runs in the first frame and added a pair in the second to grab a 5-0 advantage. Sarah Bond delivered a two-run double in the first and the Cats took advantage of three Hayden errors in the second inning. It stayed 5-0 until the fourth when Hayden got on the board with a two-out, two-run double by Sydney Hilmer and the next inning, Breanna Droge (freshman) hit a two-run homer to pull Hayden within 5-4. Holton got a solo home run from Casi VanAusdall in the bottom of the fourth, but then Droge came in to pitch for Hayden in relief and retired the first nine Holton batters she faced. Droge would add her second two-run homer to cap the scoring in the seventh inning as Hayden took their first lead of the game 7-6 following a triple by Katherine Guerra and single from Victoria Guterrez.

VanAusdall scored three of the Holton runs and fellow senior, Gabby Porras had two hits and scored twice. Annalyss Phillips added a pair of hits, including a single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but was left stranded as the potential tying run. Holton (15-6) started four freshman and a sophomore, who despite some good swings and putting the ball in play, went a combined 0-13 in the bottom half of the game lineup.

Hayden (6-14) went on to beat Rock Creek 9-7 in the championship Monday night and advance to the state tournament next week at Emporia.
