Valley Heights Goes 2-0 at Home TVL Triangular With Centralia & D-West

The League portion of the high school volleyball season rolled along on Tuesday and in the Twin Valley League Valley Heights played host to Doniphan West and Centralia. At the end of the night the host Valley Heights posted a 2-0 evening topping Doniphan West 25-3, 25-7 and beat Centralia 25-20, 25-20. Centralia earned the other win on the night beating Doniphan West 25-7, 25-8. 

Night started off strong for Valley Heights Mustangs as they opened the first set against Doniphan West with an 8-0 run and continued to add to their lead over the course of the first set leading 19-2 when Doniphan West called a timeout. A big solo block by Skyler Saunders and multiple kills by Kayla Smith helped Valley Heights establish a big lead. A pair of aces by Kennedy Stevenson helped Valley Heights solidify set one 25-3. Set two saw Valley Heights take control early with an 8-1 lead and worked to a 19-5 advantage when Doniphan West used another timeout going on to take set two 25-7 and win the match. 

Doniphan West continued their night in the next match and took on the unbeaten Centralia Panthers. Set one saw Centralia take the early lead by Doniphan West drew within two early at 6-4. That margin didn't last long as Centralia went on a 7-0 run to lead 13-4 and the lead continued to grow as the Panthers took set one 25-7. Set two was tight early as teams traded points and it was 4-4 tie but Centralia took control with a 5-0 run which turned into a 9-1 run to lead to a 13-5 Panther lead and Doniphan West timeout. Madison Lueger helped lead the charge early for Centralia while Maegan Koch recorded multiple blocks and kills down the stretch of set two to help Centralia win 25-8 and take the match. 

The nightcap proved to be a tight battle but it was Valley Heights ending Centralia's 20+game TVL win streak with a straight set win. A 7-1 start to open set one with a Stevenson ace helped Valley Heights take early control and the Mustangs lead by as many as seven in the first set. Centralia put together a 5-0 run midway through the set and battled back to draw within one multiple times but Valley Heights fended them off to take set one 25-20. A 5-0 run by Valley Heights opened set two but Centralia answered with a 4-0 run to make it tight. Stevenson took over at serve for Valley Heights again registering a few more aces which helped lead to a 12-6 Valley Heights lead. Panthers didn't go away notching a 7-0 run with kills from Kate Elliott and Lueger and gave Centralia a 13-12 lead. Teams traded jabs and points for a bit until a 6-0 run by Valley Heights to give the Mustangs a 22-16 lead and ultimately guide them to the win behind multiple kills from Smith taking set two 25-20, winning the match. 

Doniphan West wrapped up the night 0-2 falling to 1-14 on the season and 0-6 in League play but learned multiple things for a long team that's led by three seniors, Brooklyn Rush, Shayna Wilson and Calli Caudle. 

Centralia suffered the first loss of the season going 1-1 on the night moving to 10-1 on the season and 3-1 in TVL play. 

Valley Heights with their 2-0 performance improved to 9-6 on the season and 6-0 in TVL action. 

The season continues on for Centralia and Doniphan West at the Hiawatha Invite on Saturday, September 16th, while Valley Heights will be in action again on Tuesday, September 19th at Clifton-Clyde.
