Doniphan West Girls, Frankfort Boys Open 2020 Victorious

The 2020 portion of the high school basketball season officially got underway Tuesday night with nearly all area teams in action and in Highland it was a split between Doniphan West and Frankfort in Twin Valley League play.

GIRLS: Doniphan West 51, Frankfort 41

The girl’s game was the best game of the night with Doniphan West using a 13-6 third quarter to gain control and win 51-41.

It was a back-and-forth game early with Frankfort taking a 13-11 lead after one thanks in large part to nine points from senior Kennen Brandt, but Doniphan West battled back in the second quarter to take a 25-24 lead into halftime.

The Mustangs got up by as many as nine points in the second, but Frankfort battled back and snuck back to within one just before the break.

In the third Doniphan West took control with four different players finding the scoring column to take a 38-30 lead going into the fourth.

The Mustangs then iced the game away in the fourth going 6-of-8 from the free throw line while senior Makinley Smith notched seven fourth quarter points.

Doniphan West (5-3) knocked down six 3-pointers in the win and forced 12 Frankfort turnovers while Smith led the way with 13 points while Myah Olson added 12.

Frankfort (3-4) was led in scoring by Brandt’s 13 points while Mariah Broxterman added 12 and Alli Tommer nine.

Doniphan West: Makinley Smith – 13, Myah Olson – 12, Heidi Leach – 7, Chloe Clevenger – 6, Kinlee Whetstine – 5, Kyra Johnson – 4, Sadie Leach – 4.

Frankfort: Kennen Brandt – 14, Mariah Broxterman – 12, Alli Tommer – 9, Lydia Loiseau – 6.

BOYS: Frankfort 54, Doniphan West 21

From start to finish the Frankfort boys used hot shooting from the outside to force a running clock in the fourth quarter in a 54-21 win over Doniphan West.

The Mustangs hung right with the Wildcats in the first quarter despite eight turnovers and trailed just 12-9 after one, but the Wildcats held Doniphan West to just one point in the second and won the quarter 15-1 to take a 27-10 lead into the halftime break.

Junior Aiden Gerstner was big for the Wildcats in the second as he knocked down three 3-pointers to score nine points while fellow junior Gavin Cornelison added eight more first half points.

Frankfort put the game away with a 22-9 third quarter, as Gerstner knocked down three more triples and Cornelison added 11 points in the quarter forcing a running clock in the fourth.

The Wildcats knocked 10 total 3-pointers in the win and were led by Cornelison’s 21 points while Gerstner added 18 on six treys.

Doniphan West struggled to score throughout and turned the ball over 15 times while being led in scoring by Cooper Clark’s nine.

Next up for the Wildcats (4-3) is a road game at Washington County on Friday, while the Mustangs (2-6) will have a bit of a break before hosting Linn next Tuesday.
