Four second round games were played Thursday at the 43rd annual Hiawatha Girls Invitational. Jackson Heights and Marysville advanced to a rematch in the chamionship game.

Semifinal = Jackson Heights 35, Hiawatha 30

After three lopsided games, the final contest of the night was the most closely contested. However, the host #4 seed Hiawatha did not score in the first 10 minutes of the game.  Jackson Heights was only able to stake a 9-0 advantage after one quarter and led 11-0 a couple minutes into the second stanza before Hiawatha scored nine straight and the game was within seven points the rest of the way.

The Redhawks pulled within 11-9 after treys by Bailey Pierce and Clara Lindstrom and had several possession to tie or take the lead in the second and third quarters. Trailing 19-14 at halftime and 25-24 entering the fourth quarter, the Hawks finally tied the game for the first time at 27 with a triple by Kate Madsen early in the fourth period. Jackson Heights would answer and eventually senior star Kylie Dohl made four of six free throws in the final 11 seconds of the game to secure the win.

It was the ninth consecutive victory for the Lady Cobras (9-1) who had to overcome 26 turnovers in the win and, like Hiawatha, did not shoot the ball well all night.  Dohl finished with 14 points while Amaya Marlatt added nine and Abby Brey scored six of her eight points in the first quarter.

Hiawatha had 17 turnovers themselves but hit four treys and was 12 of 19 from the foul line, despite missing four charity tosses in the final 25 seconds.  The Hawks got eight points from Pierce while Lindstrom had seven before Hiawatha fell to 4-5 on the season.

Semifinal  = Marysville 63, Maranatha 25

The #7 seed Lady Buldogs continued to show their higher classification and competition level by dominating their second straight tourney foe.  Marysville won the first quarter 21-7 and the second quarter 25-7 on way to the route Thursday. Sami Bartels scored 22 points while Madison Ronnebaum chipped in 16.

Consolation = St. Mary's 55, Atchison 22

Behind a 23-2 first quarter, the Lady Bears quickly put away the Atchison girls. Jaylee Hurd and Morgan Hurla each scored 16 points for #5 seed St. Mary's, who bounced back from a tough two-point loss against the host Hiawatha in the opening round.  Atchison got seven points each from sophomores Ja'myah Booker and Makyah Boldridge.

Consolation = Falls City 52, Horton 42

A 15-7 second quarter proved to be the difference in a foul-fest and free throw heavy game to open the day. Hannah Clary had 15 points while Michelle Beer added 12 and Madi Jones chipped in 11 for the Lady Tigers who went 11-19 from the charity stripe.

Kailea Smith scored a game high 18 points for the Horton girls and Maliyah Soto added 13, but only four players scored for the #2 seed Chargers (7-4) who finished 11 of 20 from the foul line and dropped their second straight tourney game.
