Frankfort Girls Fight Off South Gray, Advances To State Semi-Finals

The Frankfort Lady Wildcats took the hardwood as the 3 seed at the Class 1A Division I State basketball tournament, and held off the South Gray Rebels by a final of 61-53. 

The Rebels came out of the gates quickly, jumping on the Wildcats 7-2 in the first quarter before Frankfort went on a 6-0 run to take their first lead. That would be the only lead they had in the first half however, as South Gray ended the frame up 13-10. In the second quarter, South Gray would extend their lead to as much as 18-11 before the Wildcats closed the half on a 9-3 run to trail 21-20 at the break. 

Junior Sydney Wapp had just 3 points at halftime, the Wildcats also had 13 turnovers in the first half that led to 10 points for the Rebels. Halftime was the perfect time for coach Brian Ebert to make some adjustments, and they paid off in large quantities. Frankfort, led by Wapp, scored 21 points in the third quarter to take a 41-36 lead heading to the final frame. The Wildcats would never relinquish the lead and move on to take on Quinter in the Semi-Finals at 6PM on Friday.

Wapp had an impressive, 19 second half points to lead all scorers with 22 for the game and 5 boards, while Junior Emma Hardwick and Junior Hatie Gros each chipped in 15 each with Hardwick leading the team with 6 assists in the game. Frankfort ended the game with 19 turnovers, just 6 in the second half while allowing just 3 second half points off of those turnovers. 

As a team, the Wildcats made 24 of their 30 free throw attempts for an astonishing 80% clip from the line. From the floor, the 'Cats shot lights out, 65% from the field in the second half and 58% for the game.
