It was a night of thrill For KMZA Radio last night as we had the first time all season to see three ranked teams in one night, the first time all season using a shot clock, and the first OT as well. The Lady Eagles entered as the #4 ranked team in 1A D1 and were looking to bounce back after their crushing loss to Centralia, whereas the Lady Wildcats were aiming to rebound off what was a tough loss to Hanover just a week prior. The Eagle Boys were ranked #10 heading into the night and the Frankfort Boys were ranked #9 with both teams needing a win after losing in close games last Friday.

Girls - Clifton-Clyde over Frankfort 49-38

A slow start scoring for both teams was the trend of the opening quarter with a 10-5 game heading into the second quarter, Frankfort with the lead. In the first quarter, both teams roughly had about the same number of turnovers with four each, it just came down to rebounds and taking advantage of second-chance opportunities, and Frankfort took charge.

Scoring picked up in the second quarter for both teams, however, the Lady Eagles would out-score Frankfort 18-17 in the quarter to head into the half down just 27-23. Sevy Wurtz finally got herself on the board with just two points for the Eagles, but mainly Lillian Steinbrock broke out this quarter with seven points to help propel the Eagles into the half. Ashlyn Dalinghaus, before later having to exit the game, had a lights-out performance in the second quarter with twelve points, nine coming off of three-point shots. The Wildcats would hit a total of four threes in the second quarter.

Frankfort managed to win the third quarter in scoring and went into the fourth with a decent lead of 36-31. Sevy Wurtz had six of the team’s total eight points in the quarter, but that’s all the rest that the TVL All-League player would impact on the score-book for the rest of the game.

On pace for an upset, but unfortunately, the wheels fell off for the Lady Wildcats as they went on to be out-scored in the fourth quarter 18-2, losing 49-38. Not only were shots just not going in but Frankfort would nearly double their turnovers on the game in just the final quarter. The stout junior in Calyn Baker for the Eagles had a breakout performance in the fourth by putting up seven points early on to get the Eagles back the lead.

The player of the game went to Calyn Baker who totaled up thirteen points and a few rebounds, but mostly gets the handed credit for the comeback in the fourth quarter. Sevy Wurtz would finish with just eight points but would lead the team in rebounds with nine. Lillian Steinbrock also finished with ten points in the game. Frankfort’s leading scorer came from Ashlyn Dalinghaus with her fourteen total points, as she finished the night with three total threes all coming from the second quarter. Tessa Partemer had another great game with a total of ten points and roughly three rebounds. Loralei Loiseau and Mylee Haug would both finish with seven points each (ALL STATS NOT APPROXIMATE).

Boys - Clifton-Clyde over Frankfort 54-49

The #10 ranked Clifton-Clyde Eagles and #9 Ranked Frankforts Wildcats went just as terrific as you can expect for a TVL match-up with both teams making it go down to the absolute wire. To start though the game opened up with a canned three-point shot from Jack Skocny who would go on to have three more threes before the half’s end. It was a slow start going for Frankfort but they managed to catch it up to just a one-point game 13-12 going into the second quarter.

The Eagles would have another thirteen-point quarter, but his time held Frankfort to just ten. Jack Skocny finished the half already with eighteen total points and four threes while going four-of-five from the free-throw line. The half ended 26-22 with yet another quarter where the Wildcats were having to play catch-up, but going into the locker room they were ready to ignite as they had the last four points of the half.

Continuing where they had left off the Wildcats would stay on a roll until eventually they had the lead heading into the fourth 36-34. Tyler Smith and Wes Anderson would nail massive threes in this quarter to get the Wildcats in the lead while Jack Skocny would add just one of his own.

Jack Skocny would yet again have to put his team on his back for an entire quarter as he scored eight points alone in the fourth to keep it a close game. The game was also tied multiple times at 36-36, 41-41, 44-44, and then finally 46-46 to send it into overtime. The Wildcats did have a chance to end the game in the fourth with a deep corner three from Porter Colvin but he just overshot the basket by a foot as time went on to expire. Then overtime hit for the first time this season for both of these teams.

Carter Olson managed the only score in OT for the Wildcats with a top-of-the-arch three, however, that wouldn’t be enough as the Clifton-Clyde Eagles would score eight in the quarter with five points from Trexin Koch and just three from Jack Skocny. Four points of their total of eight points in the quarter came from the free-throw line. The game would end with Frankfort losing 54-49, having now lost five straight to the Eagles.

Jack Skocny would finish as the clear winner for player of the game with his thirty-four total points, six threes, his ten-of-fifteen free-throw performance from the line, and ten rebounds. Trextin Koch would finish with nine points on the game as the only other notable scoring mention for the Eagles. The Wildcats were a little more distributed with their scoring on the board with Wes Anderson finishing the game with eighteen points and four rebounds. Carter Olson and Chase Stallbaumer would both finish with six points each. And if there could be a player of the game for both sides- Tyler Smith gave it his all for Frankfort having a total of just nine points and two threes, but the entire game he fought hard to continue to come back on the court, despite having to limp off to the bench multiple times(ALL STATS NOT APPROXIMATE).

Summary

The Frankfort Boys drop to now 5-3 on the season and 1-2 in league play, while the Lady Wildcats drop to 1-2 in TVL play and 4-4 overall. The Lady Eagles completed the comeback to improve to 7-1 overall and 1-1 in league play as the Clifton-Clyde Boys also picked up their first TVL win to move up to 1-1 in the league but also 5-3 overall. The Eagles will next play Blue Valley-Randolph on Tuesday before setting their sights on the TVL tournament. The Wildcats will have Doniphan West on Tuesday and Valley Heights as a make-up game on Thursday before they host the TVL Tournament.
