Valley Heights Drops First Match But Sweeps Next Two to Qualify for Saturday

The Valley Heights Mustangs secured their spot on Saturday to take on Hillsboro at 1:00 PM in the State Semi-final in class 2A. Coverage will be on 103.9 KNZA. The Mustangs went 2-1 in pool play to secure their spot, dropping their first match to Oakley in three sets before rallying back and getting back-to-back straight-set wins over JCN and Conway Springs. 

The Valley Heights Mustangs went into three sets against Oakley, winning the first set 25-12, before dropping sets two and three 25-22 and 25-21. Valley Heights had at one point a 10-6 lead in the set and also a 10-5 lead in set three. Despite dropping the match, Ava Smith finished with an outstanding 27 kills in the loss with an additional two aces. 

The Mustangs would then bounce back against JCN in straight sets in dominant fashion, 25-14 and 20-25. Set one was reasonably close for a bit, being at one point tied 8-8, before Valley Heights would go on to take 17 out of the next 23 points. Mia Vermetten played her best match of the pool play against JCN, finishing with 8 kills, an ace, and a combination of 10 total points. 

The final match for Valley Heights would end against Conway in straight sets, 25-11 and 27-25. In the second set, the Mustangs had a chance to put it away at 24-21, but then the Cardinals rattled off five straight to go up 25-24. But Mia Vermettan would help put it away again, 27-25, to secure the set two finish. Ava Smith led with 12 kills against the Cardinals, while Miller was right behind her with three. 

Ava Smith: 48 total kills, 2 aces, 50 total points.
Mia Vermetten: 13 kills, 2 aces, 16 total points.
Paige Miller: 5 aces, 3 kills, 8 total points. 
Josie Parker: 12 kills, 5 blocks, 19 total points
