2018 Legion Baseball State Tournament Brackets – AA State & AAA State

The AA state legion baseball tournament continued Thursday from Somerset Park in Sabetha, and Marysville moved to 2-0 with a win while Sabetha and Silver Lake each suffered losses.

Marysville Moves to 2-0 with Comeback Win

After playing the late game on Wednesday Marysville had to turn right around and play the 10 am game, and after struggling early Marysville found their groove scoring seven runs in the final three innings to take down Garnett 9-4.

Marysville committed five errors in the first two innings on defense which allowed Garnett to take a 3-0 lead after an inning and a half. Hunter Warnick then got Marysville on the board with a solo home run in the bottom of the second, which seemed to kick start the offense.

After Garnett tacked on a run in the top of the third, Marysville responded with their first big inning plating three runs on four hits with RBIs coming from Jayton Haggard and Adam Lindhorst.

Marysville then took the lead with three more runs in the fourth on three walks and a couple of errors, before putting the game out of reach with two runs in the sixth.

Jayton Hagaard finished 2-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored for Marysville, who will now play Hays-TMP in the final game of the night Friday at 8:15 in the final game of pool play.

Sabetha Can’t Hold Early Lead in Loss to Hays

Sabetha desperately needed a win Thursday night after falling to Marysville in their opening game, but despite a quick start Hays-TMP gave the Raptors their second loss, 5-2, effectively ending Sabetha’s shot at playing on the weekend.

The Raptors couldn’t have asked for a better start as Joe Gruber recorded three strikeouts on the mound through the first two innings while setting the Monarchs down in order. Gruber then did damage at the plate recording an RBI-double, as Sabetha plated two runs in the second with Mason Spellmeier also recording an RBI.

After Sabetha left the bases loaded in the top of the third Hays had their big inning, as the Monarchs scored three runs on three hits and a walk all with two outs to take a 3-2 lead. TMP tacked on another run in the fourth and one in the sixth, while Sabetha could only record one hit in the final four innings.

Joe Gruber was named the McDonalds “Player of the Game” on 103.9 KNZA, as he was 2-for-2 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored while also tossing 5.2 innings allowing five runs on just six.

Next up for Sabetha is the 6:00 game Friday night, as they will close out their season against Garnett on 103.9 KNZA.

Silver Lake Falls to Hoisington in the Late Innings

Silver Lake has put themselves in a must-win situation after falling late in the final game of the night Thursday to Hoisington 8-5.

Hoisington took an initial 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the second inning, but Silver Lake came right back and tied the game as Wyatt Heiman and Trent Byers each scored runs on four hits and an error.

Hoisington took the lead back with a run in the fourth, but once again Silver Lake was able to tie the game with a run in the fifth on a RBI-double from Cale Adams.

The 3-3 score held until the seventh when Hoisington broke through with five runs on two walks and just one hit, while Silver Lake could only pick up two runs in the bottom half of the inning to end the game.

Silver Lake finished with just three hits in the contest, and now must win Friday morning at 10:00 against Iola who has outscored opponents 25-1 so far in the state tournament.
