Doniphan West Girls Win State Cross Country Title to Lead Area Finishers

The high school cross country season ended Saturday with teams competing at their respective state tournaments and one area team claimed a state championship while several individuals earned medals.

The lone state championship came in Class 1A as the Doniphan West girls claimed a state title with three top 20 finishers led by Elle Williams who finished in fourth place. The Mustangs also had Chloe Clevinger take 11th, Claire Cole 16th, Lilly Clark 63rd, Emma Albers 65th and Aly Globin 67th out of 85 competitors.

In other 1A finishers on the girl’s side Washington County’s Natalie Roepke finished sixth while Centralia’s Olivia Kuckelman took seventh.

On the boy’s side in Class 1A the top team finish came from Axtell who came in second with four top 40 finishers led by Quinn Buessing who came away with sixth place. The Eagles also had Clark Werner take 14th, Simon Schmitz 29th and Mitchell Buessing 36th.

The only other top finisher on the boy’s side in 1A was Valley Falls’ Noah Hefty who came in 20th.

In Class 2A the only top finish on the girl’s side came from Jackson Heights’ Annie Allen who claimed 18th, while on the boy’s side the Cobras Daniel Little finished fourth.

The best finish on the boy’s side in 2A came from Jeff County North’s Trevor Pentlin who took second, while McLouth ended fourth as a team with Henry Cloyd finishing 16th and Jared Plake 17th.

In Class 3A Hiawatha led the way with the only top finishers as Kate Madsen led the girls by finishing 18th while Justin Hodge led the boys with a 15th place finish.

Top state finishers were rounded out in Class 4A on the girl’s side as Atchison’s Adalynn Collins ended her career with an eighth-place finish.
