Centralia Wraps Up 2019 with Sweep of Washington County

The 2019 portion of the high school basketball season came to a close for the Centralia and Washington County basketball teams Thursday night and it was a Panther home sweep as the girls won 55-39 while the boys wrapped up the sweep with a 55-46 victory.

Girls: Centralia 55, Washington County 39

After a back-and-forth first half which saw Centralia lead by one after the first quarter and by one at halftime the Panthers used a strong third quarter to jump in front and never look back in a 55-39 home win.

The Panthers got off to a good start behind seven points from senior Morgan Kramer, but the Tigers battled and got within one, 11-10, after the first with five different girls finding the scoring column.

That score held through halftime as Centralia senior Olivia Kuckelman and sophomore Abbie Flentie each scored five in the second quarter to lead 23-22 at the half despite four points from Washington County senior McKenzie Metz.

Centralia took control with a 16-6 third quarter behind eight points from sophomore Avery Deters and eight combined points between Kramer and Flentie.

The Panthers put the game away with a 16-11 fourth behind a 6-of-8 effort from the free throw line including a perfect 4-of-4 shooting from Kuckelman.

Centralia finished 8-of-11 from the line in the game and knocked down three 3-pointers all in the first half led by Kramer and Deters who each scored 14.

Washington County was led by sophomore Riley Dusin who was great all night long finishing with 11 points while Metz added 10.

Centralia wraps up the 2019 portion of the schedule with three straight wins and a 3-2 record while Washington County ends the year at 4-2.

Centralia: Morgan Kramer – 14, Avery Deters – 14, Olivia Kuckelman – 9, Abbie Flentie – 9, Kennedy Becker – 5, Sarah Koch – 4.

Washington County: Riley Dusin – 11, McKenzie Metz – 10, Alyssa Kern – 6, Jaise Chandler – 4, Camryn Boykin – 4, Grace Otott – 4.

Boys: Centralia 55, Washington County 46

Despite trailing by as many as seven in the first half the Centralia boys used a 15-4 third quarter to jump in front and never look back to earn a 55-46 victory.

Washington County started fast though jumping out to an 18-14 after one quarter behind seven points from junior Drew Buhrman and six more from senior Tyler Nelson.

The Tigers extended their lead to five at halftime after a 16-15 second with senior Garret Otott scoring seven of his nine points in the quarter.

Centralia battled back and took a 44-38 lead after three behind a 15-4 third quarter on the back of senior Kamble Haverkamp who scores nine points in the quarter.

Haverkamp then put the game away with a perfect 4-of-4 effort from the free throw line as he finished with a game-high 22 points while the Panthers finished 11-of-13 from the line as a team.

Washington County was led in the loss by 13 points from senior Tyler Nelson while junior Kobe Hoover added 11.

Centralia wraps up the first five games of the schedule on a four-game win streak at 4-1, while Washington County drops to 4-2.
