At state for the first time in school history the Doniphan West girls’ basketball team took the long road trip to Little River and after trailing early the Mustangs pulled away late and moved on the semifinals of the 1A-DI state tournament with a 57-44 victory.
It was a slow start for Doniphan West who trailed 15-11 after the first quarter, but the Mustangs battled back and outscored Little River 14-12 in the second to trail just 27-25 at the half.
The third quarter is when the Mustangs started to roll outscoring Little River 15-7 in the third to lead by six going into the fourth before sealing the game with a 17-10 fourth.
The sophomores continued to lead the way for the Mustangs as Chloe Clevenger played 31 minutes and scored 20 points knocking down three triples while Avery Weathersbee added 14 points and 6 rebounds.
Doniphan West also got 8 points from Jaiden Taylor while freshman Malaina Whetstine contributed 7 rebounds.
The Mustang girls now head to the semifinals with a 20-3 record as the 2-seed and will take on Norwich on Thursday night at 7 p.m. in Dodge City with live coverage on 103.9 KNZA.
