Former Atchison Lady Red Mattie Dougherty Playing Big at Allen County
Mattie Dougherty

Throughout a collegiate sports season there are always accomplishments that happen along the way and it is one thing to be recognized by your school, but it is another to be recognized by your conference.

For former Atchison Lady Red Mattie Dougherty, she felt that success last week as the Allen County sophomore was named the Kansas Jayhawk Conference volleyball defensive player of the week.

The Red Devil libero registered a 7.27 dig per set average last week against some of the conference’s best hitters racking up 80 total digs in three matches.

The big week ranks her first in the Jayhawk Conference East Division in digs with 243 which also puts her eighth in the country in Division II.

Her average of 4.96 digs per set ranks her first in the conference as well while she is also seventh in conference in service aces with 15 on the year.

As a freshman Dougherty had major contributions as well for Allen County as she posted over 230 digs which had her third on the team in her first year at the collegiate level.

Dougherty arrived at Allen County after a strong career at Atchison where she was named a first-team all-Kansas City-Atchison League selection her final three seasons.

In her senior season she really shined, posting over 220 kills and over 275 digs while racking up 62 aces as well.

Dougherty will look to continue her strong sophomore season and help lead the Red Devils to a winning record with nine matches remaining in the regular season.
