Axtell Boys & Girls Win Track Triangular with Frankfort & Linn

Gearing up for the month of May and a weeks away from league, regionals and state three teams from the Twin Valley League faced off against each other in with Frankfort playing host to Linn and Axtell.

It was the Axtell Eagles at the end of the day coming out on top of the three teams with both the boys and girls winning the team points totals. On the girls side the Eagles amassed 73 points, behind six first place finishes. While in the boy’s competition, Axtell compiled six first place finishes, also but only took home the team by one point, after totaling 66 points.

Frankfort boys took home second with a 65 point performance with Linn finishing third only eight points back of first place with a total of 58 points. The Linn girls took home second seven points behind Axtell, posting 66 points on the day, while Frankfort finished third with 40 points.

On the boys side of competition it was competitive and balanced throughout all the events between the three teams as Axtell, Frankfort and Linn each won six events titles.

For the Eagles who finished first place as a team they were led by their relay teams who won the 4x100, 4x400 and 4x800 meter relays and their other three gold's, also came in the events on the track. Axtell registered the win in the 4x100 with a time of 46.18 from the team of Taylor Platt, Payton Heinen, Dylan Heiman and Shane Talbot. Talbot was also a part of the Eagles 4x400 relay win with Zach Heinen, Jacob Meybrunn and Caleb Heiman joining Shane and finishing with a time of 3:47.54. The 4x800 relay team had the best performance for the Eagles, winning the gold by over 36 seconds (9:06.26) behind the running of Christian Buessing, Shane Torrey, Kristian Scheibe and Adam Kuckelman.

Axtell's three other first place finishes came at the hands of members of the relay teams in Shane Torrey, Zach Heinen and Jacob Meybrunn. Torrey took home the 400 meter dash title (54.67), Heinen took home the win in 800 meter run (2:14.68) and Meybrunn won the 300 meter hurdles (47.30).

The Wildcats of Frankfort on the day were led by Adam Koch and Lucas Adams who each took home a pair of first place finishes. Koch dominated the 1600 and 3200 meter runs winning each competition by nearly 30 seconds in the 1600 and winning the 3200 by little over one minute and 10 seconds (times of 4:57.72 and 11:20.28, respectively). For Adams he took home a pair of field event titles winning the pole vault (10-06) and long jump (18-02) crowns.

Jacob Studer and Alex Surdez rounded out the first place finishes for Frankfort winning the 110 meter hurdles (18.15) and javelin (154-07), respectively.

Linn like Frankfort had multiple multi-gold winners in the competition with Kurt Van Der Merwe, Chad Gross and Brett Peters all winning two events. Van Der Merwe swept the 100 and 200 meter dashes with times of 11.42 and 24.31, respectively. Gross did his damage in the field events, leaping to a pair of wins in the high jump (5-11) and triple jump (39-05.50), while Peters tossed his way to a pair of wins in the shot put (42-05.50) and discus (132-01). Brett took the discus throw title by nearly 10 feet in the competition.

On the girls side of competition the first place Axtell took home six first place finishes, but the second place team Linn took home ten first place finishes, while Frankfort tallied two.

The Eagles soared to wins in the 400, 1600 and 3200 meter runs, the 300 meter hurdles, 4x800 meter relay and long jump. Leading the way for the lady Eagles was Audrey Schmitz who took home a pair of gold medals winning both the 800 meters (2:41.15) and 1600 meters (5:50.76); Audrey took home the 1600 crown by nearly a minute and 15 seconds. Bradie Schmitz and Ashley Buessing took home wins on the track winning the 400 meter dash (1:04.11) and 300 meter hurdles (52.92), respectively.

The 4x800 meter relay title came to the Eagles after they registered a time of 10:57.33, with a team of Kelsey Olberding, Bridget Koch, Susan Peschal and Tricia Schmitz. While, the lone field event title for Axtell came at the hands of Hannah Mitchell who leapt to the win in the long jump (14-02).

For the Linn Bulldogs they were led by two relay wins and multiple gold's by Acacia Thalmann and Nicole Ohlde. Bulldogs took home the 4x100 and 4x400 titles behind times of 53.76 and 4:32.97, with teams of Acacia and Kesiah Thalmann, Kendra Bargman and Rachel Bott in the 4x100 and Bott, Bargman, K. Thalmann and Liza Van der merwe in the 4x400. Acacia on top of being part of the 4x100 team won the 200 meter dash (28.43) and the high jump (5-00).

Ohlde won the 3200 meter run (13:20.40) and shot put (31-05.25) for the Bulldogs, with Bott and Bargman also winning an individual event. Bott took home the triple jump crown (32-11.75) and Bargman grabbed first in the 100 meter dash (13.13). Linn's other first place finishes came at the hands of Krista Wilgers and Kaylie Rahe who won the javelin (111-08) and the 100 meter hurdles (18.20).

Frankfort rounded out the action with a pair of first place finishes in the girl’s competition as Jessa Jones won the pole vault and Calley Bergmann won the discus. Jones vaulted to the tune of 7-06 to win that event, while Bergmann took the discus behind a toss of 101-99.

TVL teams now turn their attention to one or two more meets before league action on the track in the coming weeks in May.
