Day Two NEK Legion Tournament Action -- Doniphan County & Seneca Advance to Championship

Day two of action in the NEK League Legion tournament on Sunday at Somerset park in Sabetha continued the trend of piling up runs for the winning teams and lopsdied games overall this time in two consolation games and the semifinals.

In the consolation games Atchison took down Royal Valley 11-0, while Frankfort topped a shorthanded Hiawatha squad 11-3.

In the semifinals, first up Seneca and Holton battled in the tightest ballgame of the tournament thus far with Seneca grabbed the 10-6 win. In the second half of the nightcap Doniphan County pounded out the win routing Sabetha 14-1.

With wins Doniphan County and Seneca will meet up in the NEK League Legion tournament championship at 8:00pm, Monday evening. Consolation Bracket -- Atchison tops Royal Valley 11-0

After both Atchison and Royal Valley beat in lopsided games in their first round matchups it was Atchison coming up with the offense in this showdown for the 11-0 win.

Working to a 7-0 early lead through the first three innings Atchison ended the game behind a four-run fourth inning with Hunter Olberding leading the way with a two-run homer to right field in the inning. Mark McDermed and Jimmy Priest tallied a run each in the inning, also.

While, Atchison packed the offensive punch, the highlights came on the mound for Atchison, too. Ben Ervin grabbed the win giving up just three hits, one walk and no runs with four strikeouts.

Atchison moved to .500 on the season with the win improving to 2-2 on the year, while Royal Valley is still in search of their first win of the season, falling to 0-3.

 

Consolation Bracket -- Frankfort beats Hiawatha 11-3

Each team came out firing early looking to establish offense early in the game with both Frankfort and Hiawatha each tallying a run in the first inning. Then the shorthanded Hiawatha continued the scoring in the second with another run.

In the bottom of the second, Frankfort continued the scoring plating five-runs in the inning but the story of the game came in the second as Hiawatha's, Ryker Smith left the game with an apparent serious left arm injury, leaving Hiawatha with eight players for the remainder of the game. Frankfort did their damage in the second behind a pair of RBI singles from Lucas Adams and Alex Sudrez and a RBI double by Sam Steinlage.

Runs continued to compile in the third with a run each for Hiawatha and Frankfort in the third, then Frankfort padded their lead with a three-run fourth behind a triple by JT Rosine who also scored in the inning.

Leading 10-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning Frankfort plated the winning run in the inning behind an error at the hands of Hiawatha to grab the 11-3 win.

Steinlage lead the offense for the Frankfort with a pair of hits, run scored and two RBI's, Rosine also posted a pair of hits, including a double with two runs scored, while Derek Trimble grabbed the pitching victory.

With the win Frankfort improved to 2-2 on the season, while Hiawatha fell to 2-2 on the season after sweeping Holton in a double header to start the season.

 

Semifinals -- Seneca beats Holton 10-6

It was the tightest ballgame of the tournament with multilpe lead changes and ties early with Seneca taking control late scoring seven runs in the fifth and sixth innings to grab the 10-6 win over Holton.

Back and forth through the first four innings it was 3-3 after four when Seneca appeared to take control of the game with a four-run fifth inning behind five hits. But, Holton responded with three-runs in the top of the sixth to cut Seneca's lead to one run (7-6). Seneca then answered with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the sixth and went on to win.

For the second straight day Seneca compiled the hits with Alex Rottinghaus, Devin Henry and Alex Hermesch registering multi-hit games, while Josh Schraad lead the way with a 2-4 night with three RBI  and two runs scored to earn McDonald's "Player of the Game" honors.

Holton had Luis Butto and Jordan Booth each score a pair of runs, while Booth registered a hit and Jason Yingst tallied a double.

With the win Seneca improved to 2-0 on the season and punched their ticket to the NEK League Legion tournament championship game were they have been the last couple years, winning the tournament the last two years. Holton with the loss falls to 1-3 on the season and plays for third place in the tournament on Monday night.

 

Semifinals -- Doniphan County routes Sabetha 14-1

The offense started early for Doniphan County in their 14-1 win over Sabetha and came up big late to end the game on a strong performance.

After getting multilpe bae runners on early in the contest Doniphan County lead it 5-1 after two innings, with four runs coming in the second innings. Sabetha scored their lone run in the second with McKenzie McAfee scoring after being hit by a pitch.

With offense lacked in the run producing in the middle innings but in the sixth, Doniphan County batted around to plate eight runs in the inning behind six walks and three hits taking a 14-1 lead and holding Sabetha scoreless in the bottom of the sixth.

Doniphan County continued to compile hits throughout the contest with Nathan Gaarder going 3-4 with two runs scored and four RBI, while Caleb Winkel went 2-4 with three runs scored, RBI and walk and every Doniphan County player scored at least one run in the contest. Winkel also earned the pitching win going the distance giving up only two hits, four walks, one hit batter with three strikeouts, earning himself McDonald's "Player of the Game" honors.

Sabetha only mustered a pair of hits with a triple by Graham Droge and single by McAfee.

With the win Doniphan County improved to 2-1 on the season and set up a matchup with Seneca in the NEK League Legion tournament championship on Monday night at 8:00pm, while Sabetha will play Holton for third after their loss sends them to a 5-2 record the season.
