Benedictine College men’s soccer coach Rob Herringer has been named a finalist for the 2013 Kevin Gray Coach of the Year Award.

There are many reasons for Herringer to be proud of this award, but there is one special connection that he has to other finalist may not have.

Gray and Herringer are graduates of Benedictine College.

Kevin Gray passed away on June 15th, 2011, after battling cancer. Gray graduated from Benedictine College in 1982 and served on the school’s board of directors from the fall of 2009 until his passing in 2011.

Coach Herringer graduated in 2000 from Benedictine College with a B.A. in English and Secondary Education, again in 2004 with a Master of Arts in Educational Administration and was a four-year letterman on the men’s soccer team.

“Kevin was a great man,” Herringer said. “If you’re a coach or athlete in the Kansas City area, you would know who he is and what he did.”

The Kevin Gray Player of the Year Awards recognize the athletic achievements of soccer players in the Kansas City area in five categories: male youth, female youth, adult player, coach and ambassador.

“Coaches receive awards based on the special accomplishments of their players and I have been blessed with the opportunity to work with some truly amazing young men at Benedictine College," said Herringer in a press release.

Under the leadership of Herringer, the Raven soccer team compiled an impressive 97-34-15 overall record and has been consistently ranked in NAIA Top 25 over the past eight years. Herringer guided Benedictine to a rare double championship in 2012 as the Ravens earned both the Heart of America Athletic Conference regular season and postseason tournament titles. Herringer also earned the 2012 HAAC Coach of the Year.

“For the last eight years, our players have represented our school and soccer program with tremendous passion and professionalism,” Herringer said. “I am honored to be their coach and thank them for providing me with this opportunity.”

The finalists will officially be introduced on Friday night at 6 p.m. live on Metro Sports in the Kansas City Metro area. The winners of the five nominated categories will be introduced on July 13 at Sporting Park.
