Last week, the Horton Chargers couldn’t muster up the offense to keep up with Jackson Heights. On Friday, the defense made sure to give the offense opportunities to succeed. The Horton Chargers relied on solid defense to lead them to a 32-8 victory over the ACCHS Tigers.

In the first quarter, the Chargers wasted no time marching down the field. On fourth down, junior quarterback Derrick Stone went under center and rushed forward on a quarterback sneak. Only needing a few inches, Stone found room and rushed into the endzone for a 26-yard score to put Horton up 6-0.

Later in the first, the Chargers used four plays to travel 46 yards to score on a one-yard touchdown rush by senior runningback Jordan Matthias to go up 12-0.

ACCHS saw success through the air early in the second quarter, but that was quickly shut down by the Charger defense. Horton received the ball late in the second and traveled 32 yards on three plays to score its third touchdown of the day. Matthias recorded his second touchdown of the game with a 15-yard touchdown reception from Stone to give the Chargers an 18-0 lead going into the half.

Both teams somewhat struggled in the third quarter, but the Charger defense decided to put points on the board themselves. Sophomore safety Derek Richardson jumped in front of a pass and returned the interception all the way to the endzone for a 60-yard touchdown return to give Horton a 25-0 lead.

The ACCHS Tigers finally get on the board with an eight-play, 26-yard drive capped off by a one-yard touchdown score by junior runningback Jesse Noll. The Tigers completed the two-point conversion and only trailed 25-8 going into the final quarter.

Horton then sealed the victory with an eight-yard touchdown toss by Stone to junior tightend Trey Dishon. Dishon kicked the PAT and that was the final point placed on the board to give the Chargers a 32-8 victory.

The whole Horton defense swarmed ACCHS all game, but Derek Richardson’s two interceptions made him the Bank of Atchison Player of the Game. Derrick Stone finished going 11-20 through the air for 199 yards and one touchdown. He also rushed seven times for 48 yards and recorded one touchdown.

Jordan Matthias led the rushing attack recording 62 yards and one touchdown on 11 carries. He also had a receiving touchdown. Trey Dishon caught the football three times for one touchdown and senior wideout Dakota Bayles recorded three receptions for 94 yards.

For the Tigers, senior quarterback Kyle Chew was effective on the ground, carrying the ball 24 times for 109 yards. Through the air, Chew went 5-15 for 44 yards and two interceptions. Senior wide receiver Chase Montgomery recorded three catches for 34 yards and Jesse Noll recorded the lone touchdown for the Tigers.

Horton improved to 1-1 on the year and will play undefeated Troy next week. For ACCHS, the Tigers fall to 0-2 and return to their home turf to host Doniphan West.
