Sabetha Girls Tennis Shines at Hiawatha Invite, While Hiawatha Has Pair Top Four Finishers

On a beautiful on Saturday morning it was four area girl's tennis teams squaring off with three other squads to take on each other in the Hiawatha Invitational action.

All three Big Seven schools with tennis teams, Sabetha, Hiawatha and Perry Lecompton hit the courts with Atchison from the area, as well.

It was the lady Bluejays continuing to highlight the action on the court for area teams playing in their third competition in a week's time the Bluejays showed strong again fielding two teams in the tournament and subbing a singles competitor in for a open Hiawatha spot. The Bluejays again took home a first place team finish in a competition.

Leading the way as usual for the Bluejays was the tandem of Amy Wysong and Ellie Montgomery who went a perfect 3-0 in pool play action cruising to wins of 7-2, 7-0 and 7-1 over Atchison, Free State and Seaman. Amy and Ellie continued to dominate in competition taking the first place match against Perry Lecompton with a 7-0 score going 4-0 on the day to take first and cap off a perfect 10-0 week for the doubles tandem.

Wins didn't stop there for Sabetha, as the doubles team of Jena Winkler and Erica Tangeman finished the day off 4-0, also winning the doubles competition number two on the day beating Hiawatha in the first place match.

Between the rest of the competitors for the Bluejays they tallied a second place finish, pair of third place finishes and a fourth place, also.

Taking home second place was Lilly Brownlee in the single number two competition going 2-2 in action, while Lexi Wenger and Nicole Brey each took home third place finishes in singles competition (competing in singles #1 and #2, respectively) each going 3-1. The doubles tandem of Jordyn Wells and Courtney Plattner took home fourth place in the double competition number one, with a 2-2 record.

For the host Hiawatha their day was highlighted by a pair of four finishes as the doubles tandem of Morgan Wood and Tara Coots took home second place in the doubles competition number one finishing with a 3-1 record. In singles competition number one it was Jamie Clary taking home fourth place for the Red Hawks going 2-2.

Perry Lecompton saw their day highlighted by a Savannah Tubby who won the singles number one competition, while Caitlyn Robb and Dani Winchester took home second in the doubles number one competition and doubles team of Bateman and Guess took home fourth in doubles number two.

For Atchison it was a struggle on the day as the young team continues to grow, Morgan O'Niones registered the only for the Lady Red.

The as the tennis season continues to progress some area teams are starting to hit their stride and others are showing improvement on the court.
