Last second touchdown gives Doniphan West first victory over Maur Hill Mount Academy

Lightning and rain covered northeast Kansas throughout Friday night, but the true excitement came from the thundering herd of the Doniphan West Mustangs in the fourth quarter. D-West traveled 50 yards to score the game-winning touchdown with 18 seconds left to beat Maur Hill Mount Academy 28-21.
 
After moving the starting time to 5:30 pm, the first quarter fell flat with both teams having a turnover apiece. Just over 30 seconds into the second quarter, senior tailback Austin Geenens gave the Ravens the first points of the game with an 80-yard touchdown run. Ravens led 7-0.
 
Doniphan West ended its scoring drought with two seconds left in the first half with a three-yard touchdown run by junior halfback Tynan Bollinger. The Mustangs missed the PAT, but only trailed 7-6 heading into halftime.
 
After a Raven punt to start the third quarter, the Mustangs marched 74 yards to the endzone, capped off with a one-yard score by sophomore tailback Lane Spiker. The two-point conversion was good and the Mustangs led 14-7 with 6:35 left in the third quarter.
 
The Maur Hill Mount Academy Ravens had enough of the long drives by Doniphan West and constructed one themselves. Powered by seven carries by Geenens, MH-MA drove 90 yards to the endzone, with Geenens finishing off the drive with a one-yard score. PAT was completed by junior kicker Rafael Diaz to tie up the game at 14-14 with 11:35 to play.
 
Thunderstorms moved into the area after the kickoff and the lightning delayed the game only 30 minutes. After the wait, the Mustangs immediately went down the field and Tynan Bollinger rushed for his second touchdown of the night, this time from 28 yards out. Bad snap on the kick after gave Doniphan West a 20-14 lead with seven minutes left.
 
On the kickoff, the Ravens went all the way to the Mustang 45. A few plays later, senior wide receiver Brian Scott, who filled in for injured quarterback Josh Caudle for the full game, rifled a pass to freshman wideout Nick Caudle and the young man used his athleticism to snatch the ball and put the Ravens inside the five-yard line. Geenens then rushed past the goal line for his third touchdown of the game to give the Ravens a 21-20 lead with 3:18 left.
 
The Mustangs caught a break from a Raven penalty on the kickoff return to put D-West right at the 50-yard line. Maur Hill Mount Academy’s defense kept holding the Mustangs back, but Doniphan West punched the ball into the endzone with a one-yard score by sophomore runningback Wade Joyce with 18 seconds left. Two-point conversion was good and Doniphan West held on to win 28-21.
 
For Doniphan West, Spiker carried the ball 20 times and recorded 98 yards and a touchdown. Tynan Bollinger rushed for 80 yards and scored twice on 16 carries and Joyce recorded 57 yards on six carries and scored once.
 
Our Bank of Atchison player of the game went to Austin Geenens after a monster performance. The senior tailback rushed for 172 yards on 14 carries and scored a trio of touchdowns. Sophomore halfback Harry Trotter recorded 43 yards on nine carries. Brian Scott rushed for 33 yards and also intercepted a Mustang pass.

Doniphan West is now 1-4 on the year and start districts next week with a battle on the road at Jackson Heights. Maur Hill Mount Academy returns home to host Horton.
