Valley Falls Takes Over 2nd Place in NEKL With Win on Horton Senior Night

Valley Falls defeats Horton 25-10, 19-25, 25-22

Valley Falls and Horton were both 8-2 in Northeast Kansas League volleyball play entering Tuesday night's triangular.  The Dragons won an exciting three set match and followed that by sweeping Jackson Heights to claim sole possesion of second place in the league behind only Jeff County North.  Valley Falls jumped to a 12-3 lead in the opening game and never looked back as Paige Clayton served the final six points for the win.  In game two, Horton was trailing 8-10 when Keely Cowley took over and served nine consecutive to put the Chargers ahead to stay at 18-10.  Allison Becker gave Horton an early lead with four nice serves in game three; but after leading 11-6 and 13-8, Valley Falls took 8 of the next 10 points to regain control.  With the third set tied at 22, Emily Lane served the final three Dragon points to seal the victory. 

In Valley Falls win against Jackson Heights, they never trailed leading 3-0 in game one before Callie Watson served eight straight and then the Dragons started the second game 7-0 before coasting to the win.  Seniors, Sierra Neiberger and Jessa Brinker played well at the net for Valley Falls along with Sydney Gish as Valley Falls improved to 20-9 overall on the season.  They have won 14 of their last 15 matches. 

Horton played their final home match of the season without their senior setter as Amber Wilhelm went down with a knee injury;  Yet, Mikayla Schmitt filled in very nicely as the Chargers won handily against Jackson Heights to improve to 13-9 overall this season.  Mariah Hisle served the final points for Horton to close the night and 8 seniors took their time to celebrate before leaving the court.  Horton seniors include: Karlyn Speer, Keeley Cowley, Amber Wilhelm, Breanna Compton, Mariah Hisle, Allison Becker, Kylie Gabbard and Shawna Strecker. 

Jackson Heights fell to 2-23 overall with the 0-2 night, but was competitive in final match as they were tied with Horton 10-10 and Sophia Wamego made it 16-15 with five straight serves.  Katelin Strube had several kills in the last game as the young Cobras battled with only six upper-classmen on the squad.
