As week six action is upon us for the Kansas High School football season and some classifications have turned their attention to district play and some will soon, its four area teams continuing to dominate the football rankings as they all have remained ranked the entire season so far.

Class 4A continues to have the defending state champs in Holton atop the rankings as they dispatched Perry Lecompton 43-6 this past Friday in a match that was called at the half due to lighting delays, keeping the Wildcats unbeaten as they improved to 5-0 on the season. Holton sets up for a tough stretch of games in the next few weeks as they take on the unbeaten Jeff West Tigers (5-0) this week (Game is the featured game on 103.9 KNZA this week), then unbeaten Wamego (5-0) comes to town the next week after that and then play at Hayden in three weeks.

Holton's next opponent, Jeff West has been garnering attention for the last few weeks as they continue win and sit at 5-0 trying to crack the top five in the polls across the state.

Class 3A continues to not have any area teams in the top five rankings but teams continue to get attention after great starts to the season through the first five weeks of action. The Riverside Cyclones for the second straight year have started their season 5-0 and are receiving votes in polls for their start to the season.  Cyclones have beat their opponents by 20-plus points this season every week, but have a tough stretch of games on their hands in the second part of the season. Riverside has the Onaga Buffalos on the docket this week, a game in which was a tight contest to the wire last year and then steps into district play with playing a Sabetha team who has won their last two games, Hiawatha whose three losses have come by a combined eight points and Horton who is 3-2 on the season.

Nemaha Valley is the other area team receiving votes in Class 3A from the area as they are 4-1 and snuck out of Hiawatha last week with a 14-13 win. The Raiders, lone loss of the season came to unbeaten Jeff West by one-point but Nemaha Valley as a tough rivalry matchup this week against Sabetha and then starts district play with matchups against Riley County, Rock Creek and Marysville, a district that looks open for the Raiders.

In Class 2-1A its been the Centralia-Wetmore Panthers dominating on the football field this season and outscoring their opponents 233-13, while posting a 5-0 record and remaining ranked number one across the state. Panthers won their 15th straight Twin Valley League 11-Man title with a 54-6 win over Valley Heights last week and picked up a district win in the process. Panthers step out of district play this week and travel to Effingham to face the ACCHS Tigers (Game is the featured game on 92.1 KMZA this week), then will have matchups against Troy, Jackson Heights and Doniphan West on the docket in district play.

Two of Centralia's district opponents are receiving votes in the latest Class 2-1A polls in Jackson Heights (4-1) and Troy (3-2), who played each other last week and Troy picked up the 18-12 overtime win giving the Cobras their first loss of the season.

In 8-Man it’s the Division II level that highlights the area as B&B and Hanover continued remain ranked. For the Falcons they opened up district play this past week with a 50-12 win over Axtell and improved to 4-1 with the win. This week the Falcons are ranked number one in three polls and number two by VarsityKansas. Falcons square off with Frankfort this week in a district matchup, then a non-district match against Southern Coffey County, before taking on Hanover on the road in three weeks.

For the Wildcats of Hanover they are now 3-1 on the season after suffering a 22-6 loss to ranked opponent in Wallace County this past week. Wildcats struggled in the matchup but look to bounce back and challenge in a tough district as they open district play this week against the Axtell Eagles who are looking for a district win, also.

In the 8-Man Division I one area team is receiving votes as Clifton-Clyde continues to receive votes after a 60-12 win over Lakeside this week to improve to 4-1 on the season.

District play is upon many area teams and will be in full force next week as teams focus on the crucial games of the season for a possible playoff spot.
