Falls City Tigers and Sacred Heart Irish Advance in Football Playoffs

Jug Brown Stadium in Falls City hosted a playoff double header Thursday.

In Class C-1 action the Falls City Tigers won their first ever playoff game 28-27 over the Wayne Blue Devils.  

Jordy Stoller scored the first and the last touchdowns for the Tigers.  The first coming on a 68 yard run in the first quarter to put the Tigers up 6-0.  Wayne came back to take the lead 7-6 in the second quarter on a 29 yard TD pass from Jalen Barry to Jared Anderson. 

Falls City recaptured the lead on a 3 yard run by Weston Witt capping a 14 play, 72 yard drive but again the extra point try failed.  Wayne answred right back to gain the lead 14-12 and that was the halftime socre.

Falls City took the lead again on their first possession of the second half on a touchdown run by Tyler DiGiacomo going ahead 20-14.

Wayne scored the next two touchdowns when  Barry threw to Luke Rethwisch to push the lead to 21-20 and the Blue Devils Blocked a punt leading to a short field and another score to go ahead 27-20.  The extra point kick attempt was blocked by Jack Hartman.

The Tigers then went on an 11 play 66 yard drive, overcoming a couple of penalties to score the final TD on a pass from Mitchell Harling to Stoller.  Brenden Heckinlively scored on a run up the middle to make it a 28-27 Tiger lead.  Stoller then intercepted a Blue Devil pass with :48 seconds left to seal the Tiger victory.  

Falls City will travel to Lincoln on Wednesday for a second round playoff game, a rematch against Lincoln Christian.  Gametime is 6 p-m at Seacrest Field in Lincoln.

The second game of the day was almost over before it started.  Sacred Heart’s Sawyer Kean returned the opening kickoff 78 yards and after the Irish defense forced a three and out series by Kenesaw, Kean sprinted 50 yards for his second TD to put the Irish up 14-0 with less than two minutes off the clock.

The Irish went on to win 58-0, scoring all of their points in the first half before reserves finished up playing most of the final two-and-a-half quarters of the game.

Senior quarterback Chaz Dunn hit 9 of his 10 pass attempts in the game for 203 yards and 5 touchdowns.  Colin Niemeyer caught five passes for 126 yards and 3 scores.

The top ranked Irish go on the road Wednesday for a 4 p-m game at Lyons – Decatur Northeast.
