3A State Cross Country Highlighted by Big Seven League Teams, Pleasant Ridge & Marysville

For the final time this season runners ready the words “Ready, take your marks” and the pistol fire as the State competition’s for cross country commenced over the weekend across the State of Kansas.

Class 3A State cross country meet was packed full of area competitors hailing form the Big Seven and Northeast Kansas League and the competition saw a pair of individual second place finish and two top five team finishes, also.

In the girls competition, defending State Champ Hiawatha Red Hawk, Jordan Puvogel looked to defend her title but came up just under 10 seconds short taking home a strong second place performance with time of 15:57.19 leading the lady Red Hawks to a third place team performance at State. Freshman, Molly Kettler took home the second best Red Hawk performance posting a time of 17:44.07 good for 28th place. Fellow freshman, McKenna Gilpin followed Kettler up taking 39th place (17:57.41), while sophomore, Kailey Davis placed 48th (18:17.36) and Mykah Barnes took home 61st place (18:40.05). Rounding out the Red hawk State performances was Katie Rosa finishing 74th (19:14.86) and Jada Rosa at 81st (19:26.18).

The ACCHS lady Tigers and lady Rams of Pleasant Ridge also competed as teams at State and finished sixth and tenth place out of the 12 teams competing.

For the Tigers they were led by sophomore, Madison Bissell who took home 19th place running to a time of 17:14.82. Beba Scholz notched the only other top 50 Tiger performance taking home 47th place with a time 18:16.39. Tiffany Gilmore, Maddison Forbes, Mackenzie Forbes and Caitlyn Fuller followed taking home 54th, 62nd, 66th and 88th places, respectively with times of 18:24.32, 18:40.17, 18:43.74 and 20:08.69.

The Rams were lead on the day by Hailey Worthington who placed 42nd with a time of 18:04.81, while Rachel Hattok took home 58th place (18:36.99) and Syvannah Williams placed 80th (19:25.08). Also, competing for the Rams was Carly Simonis, Peyton Gould, Skylar Ling and Kristina Silvers taking 82nd, 84th, 86th and DQ, respectively. Simonis posted a time of 19:32.19 for 82nd, Gould ran to a time of 19:38.47 for 84th and Ling notched a time of 19:48.01 for 86th.

Marysville had the only other area girl competing at 3A level in the State competition as sophomore Bryclin Alstrom took home 16th place with a time of 17:00.80.

On the boys side of competition the Hiawatha Red Hawks took home a fourth place team performance with senior, Tyler Boeckman lead the charge after taking home 18th place behind a time of 17:58.86. Sophomore, Brandt Houk took home 24th place as the lone other Red Hawk to notch a top 30 performance posting a time of 18:08.09. Jesse Quinn took home the third best Red Hawk performance placing 41st (18:42.30), while Brendan Steele ran to a 54th place finish (19:02.44) and Baxter DeFore placed 57th (19:03.24). Finishing off Hiawatha’s performances on the day was Beau Oldridge finishing 67th (19:19.47) and Conner Winters took home 76th (19:40.54).

Pleasant Ridge, Sabetha, Marysville and Nemaha Valley all had individual boys runners at the State competition and all of them finished in the top 30 on the day.

The best boys area individual performance came from Pleasant Ridge senior, Tony Weber who took home second place with a time of 16:34.48, 10 seconds off of the State title. Marysville Bulldog junior, Joe Smith took home a top 10 finish running his way to a sixth place finish with a time of 17:13.53.

Sabetha sent a pair of runners to the State competition and both Keegan and Corbin Cox finished in the top 30, taking home 23rd and 26th place finishes with times of 18:04.40 and 18:18.11, respectively. While Nemaha Valley Raider junior, Colin Lierz took home 30th place behind a time of 18:27.09.

Overall the Class 3A State cross country competition felt the impact of area runners as they put their stamp on the competition.
