Sabetha Wins Home Tri-State Wrestling Tourney with Other Area Top Performers

Sabetha Bluejays soared over the competition on Saturday out dueling the competition on the mats at their home Ti-State tournament to take on the tourney crown.

The Bluejays posted 194.5 total points to take home first behind a pair of first places, three second places, three third places, one fourth, three fifths and one sixth place. Wamego finished 32.5 points behind Sabetha taking second place with 162 points, while Auburn (Neb) took third. Riley County placed fourth, Pleasant Ridge fifth, HTRS/PC sixth, Atchison seventh, Marysville eighth, Bonner Springs ninth and Hiawatha/Horton tenth place.

Sabetha on the day was led by junior, Jacob Leuthold and senior, Brandon Harrell who both were perfect on the mat on the day winning their weight classes of 285lbs and 195lbs. For Leuthold he went 3-0 and earned a pair of pinfall wins in his first two matches and then in the championship beat Atchison's, Taylor Funk with a 4-2 decision. Harrell like Leuthold won both of his first matches via the pin while beating Colton Doty of Pleasant Ridge in the championship match with a 4-1 decision.

Brandon Poe, Michael Baumgartner and Ben Meyer each notched second place finishes for the Bluejays on the day in the weight classes of 182lbs, 170lbs and 138lbs, respectively. Four Bluejays took home third places after winning their first match of the day and falling in their second each Sabetha wrestler finished the day with a few wins to notch those third places. Seth Harrell (106lbs), Austin Garber (145lbs), Taylor Meyer (220lbs) each took home the bronze on the day. Brendan Rokey (160lbs) notched fourth place on the day, while Kyler Krebs (152lbs), Nate Niehues (132lbs) and Trei Harrell (120lbs) each place fifth and Corbin Halls (126lbs) took home sixth place.

Third place team, Auburn was led by four first place finishes on the day by Dalton Shearer (132lbs), Dakota Groves (138lbs), Johnny Gill (152) and Nate Moran (220lbs). While, two Bulldogs earned third place finishes and one a second place finish; Brandin Clarke (126lbs) and Jake McMann (285lbs) 3rd place each, Levi Bridgewater (106lbs) 2nd place.

Pleasant Ridge who took fifth place as a team was lead on the day by a trio of second place finishes as Colton Doty (195lbs), Nick Hyde (145lbs) and Brandon Broddle (120lbs) all took home second. Robert McManigle (182lbs) added a third place for the Rams on the day.

HTRS/PC was led by two second place finishes and a third place at the Tri-State tournament as Ben Railsback (170lbs) took third place, while Nicholas Zermeno (160lbs) and Anthony Jimenez (126lbs) both placed second.

The Atchison Redmen took home seventh place as a team but saw senior, Tyler Harris (170lbs) take home first place. The second ranked Harris went 5-0 on the day with two byes to open the competition, then registered two pinfall wins and in the championship notched a 7-3 decision victory. Redmen added a second place and two third place finishes on the day, too as Taylor Funk (285lbs) placed second, Jeff Wallingford (132lbs) and Andrew Adrian (120lbs) each took third.

For Hiawatha/Horton wrestling it was Michael Gabbard (285lbs) taking home the best performance for them on the day finishing fourth place on the day.

The Bluejays of Sabetha dominated the day at their home but there were several performances that shined on the day for all the area teams as all the wrestling squads look to build on the early performances this season.
