Multiple Area Teams Have Top Performers at Onaga Wrestling Invitational

Seven area teams competed on the mats at this year’s Onaga wrestling Invitational while six other teams competed alongside them on Saturday.

At the end of the day six area wrestlers grappled their way to first place finishes in the their weight classes, while many others have top finishes, too.

On the team side it was the host team Onaga (partnership with Centralia) coming away with the best area team performance taking home second place behind Silver Lake who won the tournament. Doniphan West (partnership with Troy) took home third place as a team, followed by Oskaloosa (partnership with McLouth) in fourth place. Riverside , Jeff West, Immaculata and Maur Hill took home ninth, 11th, 12th and 13th places, respectively.

Onaga on the day was led by a Centralia Panther in Andrew Beck who finished the day 5-0 as the second ranked 152lb wrestler in the state continued his strong season with a first place performance. Onaga’s, Jacob Bryan and Dustin Blow each registered second place performances at 132 and 195lbs, while Brandon Merriman (113lbs), Trenton Ross (126lbs), Quentin Lara (160lbs) and Kyle Ames (182lbs) all earned third place finishes. Onaga also saw a pair of fifth place finishes on the day as Jonathan Fairbanks (120lbs) and Caleb Frederick (170lbs) notched those performances.

Highland on the day while finishing third as a team and were lead by three individual first place performances garnered by wrestlers as Trevor Fee, Garrett Dunlap and Tristian Speer both earn first place finishes. Fee wrestled his way to a 5-0 day at the 170lb weight class taking home the gold, while Dunlap also went 5-0 placing first at 160lbs. Troy Trojan, Tristan Speer who currently ranks first at 220lbs in the state went down to 195lbs and took first placeA pair of third places were also earned on the day by the Highland grapplers as Kody Collins (152lbs) and Nokoma Gomer (138lbs) each placed third, while Lawrence Miller (220lbs) place fourth, Kortin Blevins (182lbs) notched a fifth place and Dalton Masters (285lbs) took home sixth place.

Dusty Bammes lead the charge for Oskaloosa/McLouth on the day as he wrestled himself to a 3-0 record on the day and who his weight class of 138lbs. Lane Hickman took home the second best performance for Oskaloosa/McLouth on the day placing second in the weight class of 170lbs, while Mark Nickels (120lbs) and Griffin Matey (145lbs) each took third; Jake Copland placed fourth at 285lbs. A pair of fifth place performances were also earned by Oskaloosa/McLouth wrestlers with Eli Coulter (132lbs) and Griffey Hayden (195lbs) and also a seventh place showing by Ben Harvey in 160lbs weight class.

Riverside, was lead on the day by a first place performances as Cyclone, Cody Walker who’s ranked second in the state in 3-2-1A at 220lbs won the weight class. Sheldon Harris added a second place performance at 120lbs on the day for Riverside, while Braxton Goacher took third at 195lbs and Da’Lon Goodwin took sixth at 170lbs.

Jeff West was highlighted on the day by a third place performance from Colton Fox at 106lbs, fourth place by Austin Michaelis (113lbs) and Cohl Bohannan (132lbs). Chase Montgomery (160lbs) and Mason Seals (195lbs) each placed sixth for the Tigers, while Kilian North (285lbs) took fifth and Dalton Davis (170lbs) notched an eighth place finish.

Immaculata was led Max Campbell who wrestled his way to second place at 160lbs, while his teammate Bruce Stanley (152lbs) took fourth and Jared Clothier (145lbs) notched a fifth place finish.

Maur Hill-Mount Academy saw a trio of wrestlers earn fourth place finishes with Blake Wilson (126lbs), Kenny Olivera (132lbs) and Austin Geenens (138lbs) each earning one of the fourth place finishes. Ben Pickman picked up an eight place finish in the weight class of 182lbs for the Ravens.

Strong showings by multiple teams at the Onaga Invitational with individual wrestling showing out and leading the way for their respective schools.
