It’s been a few years, but with the move from the Delaware Valley League, ACCHS officially returned to the Big Seven with a matchup against Sabetha.

In girls competition, the Lady Jays and Lady Tigers traded blows in the first quarter, with Sabetha gaining the advantage up 10-9. ACCHS responded by shutting down Sabetha and scoring nine points while holding Sabetha to just two. The Lady Tigers headed into halftime with an 18-12 lead. After the break, the tables turned as Sabetha scored 14 points in the third while holding ACCHS to two. The Lady Jays used the momentum gained in the third to carry over into the fourth to hold on for the 33-27 victory.

The Lady Jays were led by sophomore Mariah Huneke, who scored 12 points off the bench, eight points coming in the third quarter. Junior Heidi Heiniger chipped in seven points while sophomore Alexis McAfee cooled off with a four-point performance after opening the season with 21 points.

No player from ACCHS was in double figures, but the Bank of Atchison Player to bank on went to junior Rachel Newquist after scoring nine points. Seniors Taylor Vandeloo and Tannah Ernzen each recorded five points.

The Lady Jays improved to 1-1 (1-0) while ACCHS dropped to 1-2 (0-1).

After the close finish in the girls game, excitement continued in the first quarter of the boys matchup. ACCHS senior Quentan Reichart drained a three at the buzzer, bringing the Tigers within five, down 22-17 after the first quarter. Sabetha junior Kellen Russell felt left out as he buried a three-point shot at the end of the first half, giving Sabetha the 34-25 lead. An explosive 22-point third quarter gave Sabetha the edge and the Bluejays never looked back cruising to a 70-33 victory.

Sabetha had three players in double figures, but senior Gaven Schumann continued his hot start to the year by scoring 21 points. Senior Jacob Frey and junior Brett Plattner dropped 11 points apiece.

Only one player was in double figures for ACCHS and that was senior Quentan Reichart. Reichart was the Bank of Atchison Player to Bank on after recording 15 points, all of them coming in the first half. The next leading scorer for ACCHS was junior Jesse Noll with six.

Sabetha went to 2-0 (1-0) on the year and goes back to its home gym to host Horton on Tuesday. ACCHS fell to 0-3 (0-1) and continues Big Seven play with a road matchup on Tuesday at Nemaha Valley. Live coverage of that matchup is on 92.1 FM KMZA with Mike Smith. Girls game to start around 6 pm.
