Holton Wins Again on Mats Taking Clay Center Invite Title

Momentum seems to have carried over from last year’s State championship season for the Holton wrestling squad as they are off to a blistering start to the 2013-14 season notching another tournament title under their belt by winning the Clay Center Invitational over the weekend.

Holton Wildcats posted 141.5 points on the day to capture the team crown behind three champions, four second places, a third and fourth place, alongside a sixth and two seventh places, too. Garden City finished behind Holton with 135 points taking second, while Norton took home third with 124.5 points.

Wildcats were led on the day by the trio of Cooper Zeller, Lucas Lovvorn and Jonah Lutz who finished the day a combined 12-0 in action. Zeller took home the heavyweight division title winning 285lbs title by going 3-0 in action with a pair of pinfall wins and a win via decision. For Lovvorn he posted a 5-0 mark on the day to win his weight class of 152lbs, posting three wins via pin and two more via decision. Lutz won his final match of the day via decision and won three others to go 4-0 and win 132lbs weight class.

Tyler Price, Justin Pool, Justin Rieschick and Kyle Mick each added second place performances on the day all going 3-1 in the action on the mat. Price took home second at 120lbs, making the title bout by winning three times via pinfall. While, Pool took home second at 126lbs winning his three matches he won by decision, pin and injury default. Rieschick lost a tough decision in the championship match at 138lbs but did pick up two decision wins and a pinfall win, finishing second at 138lbs. Mick took second at 170lbs with a major decision, decision and pinfall win on the day, before falling via pin in the championship match.

Mason Baum also registered a 3-1 mark on the day but took home third place at 160lbs winning his last match by major decision to claim third on the day.

Bradley Hooper notched fourth place for the Wildcats at 220lbs, while Jameson Lutz took home sixth at 106lbs and Dominick Buterakos (113lbs) and Trey Haverkamp (145lbs) each finished with seventh place performances.

The number one Class 4A wrestling team in Holton looks to continue their hot start on the mats this season this Thursday when they travel to Sabetha to dual the Bluejays in a Big Seven showdown and then the Wildcats will take to the mat on Saturday at the Ottawa Invite.
