Raider Classic Day 2 Recap

All the top seeds have held true after 8 games at the 24th annual Raider Classic boys basketball tournament in Seneca.  All but one game has been decided by 10 points or more.

Semifinal = Falls City 56, Jackson Heights 49
The first half featured eight lead changes and the Tigers held a 13-9 lead after one quarter and got a basket with :05 left in the half to maintain a 25-23 advantage.  Cole Olberding banked in a long three to beat the third quarter buzzer and the game was tied at 36 entering the fourth.  The game was tied for the seventh time on the night at 42 each before the Tigers got a pair of big treys from Jordy Stoller and hit 10 free throws to seal the win.  Falls City, now 16-1, hit 19 of 23 free throws in the contest with Weston Witt coming off the bench to score a game-high 16 points and connect on 11 of 13 charity tosses.  Mitchell Harling added 14 points and was 4-4 at the line in the final stanza, while Reese Hogue added 9 points and Stoller and Jack Hartman each chipped in 8.  Trevin Jacobsen ended with 14 points and scored 6 straight to spark an 8-0 Cobra run and put Jackson Heights ahead 17-15 in the second quarter.  Olberding added 12 and Zane Richter scored 11 off the bench before the #4 seed fell to 10-3 on the season.  Jackson Heights will play for third place at 5:30 on Saturday.  

Semifinal = Nemaha Valley 43, Silver Lake 33
In a rematch of the Class 3A third place state tournament game from one year ago, Nemaha Valley jumped to an 8-2 lead and never looked back, leading by as many as 11 in the first half.  Silver Lake, down 24-17 at the half never made a run and struggled shooting with Jace Freeman and Trenton Smith each scoring 10 for the 8-2 Eagles.  Nemaha Valley used sufficating defense and a strong post domination to improve to 10-1 as Caleb Meyer scored 12 to lead the Riaders and Abe Elder added 11 inside.  Evan Hermesch and Justice McKernan each scored 6 and McKernan had a handful of assists.  Nemaha Valley will vie for their fourth straight Raider Classic Championship (16th overall) on Saturday night in a rematch from a year ago against Falls City. The game at 7:00 PM will be broadcast live on KNZA 103.9 FM.

Consolation = Horton 53, St. Mary's 25
Horton jumped to a 26-16 halftime lead and put the game away with a 15-3 third quarter.  Dakota Bayles had 21 points for the 7-3 Chargers while Trey Dishon added 12 and Derrick Stone 10.    

Consolation - Hiawatha 39, Marysville 27
The Redhawks held Marysville to just 3 points in each the second and third quarters and led comfortably throughout the second half.  Conner Bigham paced the 3-8 Hawks with 17 points.  Hiawatha, who fell to Horton (38-37) to begin this basketball season, will battle the Chargers in the fifth place game at 4:00 on Saturday afternoon.
