TVL Basketball Tournament -- Boys Semifinals and Other Games

On Friday night it was the boys turn to decide who would play for the TVL Tournament championship as it was the semifinals, the consolation semfinals and one consolation pool game at Washington County high school.

Semifinals

#5 Hanover vs. #1 Valley Heights    (Hanover won 44-40)

It was a close contest just like the first time Hanover and Valley Heights squared off earlier this season but unlike the first time it was Hanover getting the win this time around grabbing the 44-40 win to earn a spot in the TVL tournament championship game. Valley Heights got out to a 12-8 lead after the first quarter but clung to a one-point lead at the half, but Hanover went on a run to start the third quarter and used a 12-6 third frame to grab the lead and held on for the win. Hanover was led by senior, Wade Steinfort who scored 16 points, while Austin Diederich chipped 11 points to help Hanover to 9-3 on the year. Valley Heights fell to 9-2 on the season and will play for third place and were led by Charles Musil in the loss who scored 18 points.

#7 Linn vs. #3 Centralia    (Centralia won 69-55) 

After Linn opened the game with a quick pair of buckets, it was all Centralia as they cruised past Linn in the TVL semifinals earning the 69-55 win. Panthers pounced on Linn with a 20-7 first quarter and lead 42-23 at that half and lead blossomed into 20 points multiple times in the second half. Centralia was led by Brett Burdiek who posted 22 points and was 6-6 from the free throw line, while Devin Rempe chipped in 11 points on the night and seven other guys got in the score book for the Panthers, too. Centralia with the win moved to 9-2 on the season. Linn was plague by their 2-16 mark from three-point lane, 10 missed free throws (16-26) and the Centralia pressure. Bulldogs were led by Josh Meyer who scored 16 points, but the Bulldogs fell to 7-4 on the season with the loss and will play for third place.

Consolation Semifinals

#8 Axtell vs. #4 Baileyville-B&B     (Axtell won 45-32) 

It was a low scoring start to the game between the rivals of Axtell and B&B as the Falcons held a 15-13 lead at the half after an 11-5 second quarter, but a 32-17 second half propelled the Eagles to the 45-32 win. Eagles hit five three's and went 10-16 at the charity strip in the competition and was led by Payton Heinen who scored 14 points, while Christian Buessing chipped in 10 points. Axtell with the win moved to 8-5 on the season and will play for fifth place at the tournament. B&B with the loss falls to 6-5 on the season and was led by Luke Holthaus who scored 11 points in the game. B&B will now play for seventh place this year at the TVL tournament.

#6 Troy vs. #2 Onaga     (Troy won 58-48)

It was a rematch of a game just before the tournament for the Troy Trojans and the Onaga Buffalos and once again Troy got the best of Onaga on the hardwood notching a 58-48 win. Trojans put up 19 points in the first quarter to lead 19-14, but saw that lead evaporate as Onaga used a 14-9 second quarter to tie the game at 28-28 at the half. Troy then outscored Onaga by six in the third quarter and four in the fourth period to notch the 10 point win. Trojans improved to 8-4 on the season with the win and will play for fifth place in their first TVL tournament, as they were led by William Boeh who scored 16 points. Jake Ross added 15 points and Collin Jasper scored 13 points for Troy. Onaga with the loss falls to 6-4 and will play for seventh place in the tournament. Buffalos in the loss were led by Michael Bliss who scored 17 points, while Jarod Gronewoller scored 14 points and Mitchell Duer added 12 points.

Consolation Pool Game

The host Washington County picked up another win in the consolation pool games at the tourney taking down Blue Valley-Randolph 56-31, to help the Tigers finish this year's tournament with a 2-1 mark in action. Tigers used a 22-9 second quarter to lead 32-18 at the half and stretched that lead with a 24-13 second half. Washington County moved to 7-6 on the season with the win and was led by Kyle McGatlin who scored 22 points. Blue Valley wraps up the TVL tournament this year 1-2 and sit at 2-10 on the season. Rams were led by Marshall Carey in the loss with seven points.
