TVL Basketball Tournament -- Final Day

Another great year of action in the Twin Valley League tournament as the final day of action wrapped up at Washington County high school with multiple great games on the final day of action.

#13 Frankfort vs. #7 Doniphan West    (Doniphan West won 39-34) 
 
Doniphan West Mustangs wrapped up their first experience in the TVL tournament by winning their final two games after opening the tourney with a loss. Mustangs took down Frankfort on Saturday morning to finish the tourney winning 39-34 as Frankfort wrapped the tourney going 1-2. Frankfort led 9-7 after the first quarter buy Doniphan West took the lead into halftime 15-13, as it remained a tight contest down the stretch. Frankfort with the loss falls to 2-9 and was led by Ashley Joseph who scored 12 points. Doniphan West improved to 6-6 with the win and was led by Payton Leach and Regan Gibson who each had nine points in the win.
 
#12 Onaga vs. #11 Clifton-Clyde    (Onaga won 44-39)
 
It was a matchup of two teams looking for at least one win in the tournament and Onaga walked away with the 44-39 win to finish the tourney 1-2, while Clifton-Clyde went 0-3 in action. The lady Buffalos lead 10-9 after the first quarter and clung to the one-point lead at the half before using a 14-5 third quarter to stretch the lead. Eagles of Clifton-Clyde made a surge in the fourth with a 14-9 quarter but Onaga was able to hold them off for the win. The Buffalos were led by Jocelyn Marten who scored 19 points helping Onaga to a 3-8 record. Clifton-Clyde fell to 3-9 with the loss and were led by Kourtni Hubert who scored 10 points.

#10 Hanover vs. #9 Wetmore      (Hanover won 59-51)
 
Hanover lady Wildcats as the ten seed came out of the TVL tournament with a seventh place finish topping Wetmore 59-51 in the seventh place game. Tied at 12-12 after the first quarter, Hanover used an 18-3 second period to take the lead into halftime and outscored the Cardinals by nine in the third quarter to lead 44-30 after three quarters. Wetmore not to go quietly posted 21 points in the fourth quarter for a 21-15 frame but Hanover did enough to hold on for the win. Wetmore in the loss was led by Dakota McQueen who had 16 points, while Gerae Haverkamp scored 11 points, as the Cardinals fell to 4-9 on the season. Hanover with the win moved to 5-8 and was led by Paige Doebele who posted 27 points.

#6 Centralia vs. #4 Linn       (Linn won 57-41) 
 
Linn Bulldogs took home fifth place topping Centralia in the process to do so winning 57-41 and started the game off with a 13-5 first quarter and the Panthers struggled to get back into the game. Panthers were down nine points at the half and Linn padded that lead with a 17-10 third quarter. Linn with the win improved to 9-3 and was led by Nicole Ohlde who scored 20 points, while Kesiah Thalmann chipped in 11 points. Centralia in the loss was led by Liz Hasenkamp who scored 12 points and Kaitlyn Koch who posted 10 points. Panthers with the loss fall to 7-5 on the season taking sixth at the TVL tournament this year.

#5 Axtell vs. #3 Baileyville-B&B      (B&B won 40-26) 
 
It was a low scoring tight ballgame throughout until the final minutes of the game when the B&B Falcons used a stretch run to outscored Axtell 12-2 in the fourth quarter and earn the 40-26 win. It was a three-point game at the half 18-15 with B&B leading and it was a four-point game going into the fourth period. Axtell in the loss was led by Kierston Talbot who scored 12 points as the Eagles only had three players score. Eagles fell to 9-5 on the season with the loss taking fourth place at the TVL tourney this year. B&B in the win improved to 10-2 on the season and was led by Katie Huerter who scored 15 points; while Laura Sudbeck scored 11 points helping the Falcons take third in the tourney.

#2 Valley Heights vs. #1 Washington County      (Valley Heights won 31-28)
 
Teams traded buckets and leads in the first half and at intermission it was a tie ballgame 11-11 in the TVL championship competition between Valley Heights and Washington County. The Mustangs used a 7-0 run to start the second half to give them a lead and they ultimately held on down the stretch to earn the 31-28 win over the three-time defending TVL tournament champs, Washington County. The Tigers suffered their first loss of the season falling to 12-1 on the season and were led by Taylor Powell in the competition who scored 10 points. Valley Heights in the win had a big 14 point night by Sidney Blackburn to lead the way, while Brandi Jo Roepke tallied 12 points helping the Mustangs to an 11-1 record on the year and the school's second TVL tournament title.

#13 Frankfort vs. #10 Doniphan West     (Frankfort won 54-49) 
 
For just the second time this season the Frankfort Wildcats were on the winning side of an outcome as they've been in multiple games this season but been plagued by one bad stretch in contests. This time Frankfort used a strong second half to top Doniphan West 54-49, giving the Wildcats a 1-2 finish in the tourney. Mustangs led 28-19 at the half but a 23-13 third quarter and 12-8 fourth period shot Frankfort back into the game and to the win. Frankfort was led by Adam Koch who posted 15 points; Lucas Adams added 12 points and Brett Kenworthy scored 10 points, as the Wildcats moved to 2-9 on the season with the win. Doniphan West wrapped up their first ever appearance in the TVL tournament going 0-3 and sit at 4-8 on the season as they were led by Cooper Leach and Jeff Watts in the loss with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
 
#12 Wetmore vs. #11 Clifton-Clyde      (Clifton-Clyde won 65-47)
 
A quick start and strong finish propelled Clifton-Clyde to a win over Wetmore as the Eagles lead 15-7 after the first quarter and closed the game with an 18-9 fourth period to gain the 65-47 win. Clifton-Clyde wrapped the tournament by going 2-1 with a pair of wins in the consolation pool games and sit at 5-7 on the season. Eagles were led by Caleb Gelino in the win with 18 points, while Nick Kennedy and William Ohlde each added 13 points and Colin Sikes chipped in 11 points. Wetmore in the loss was led by Jemery Hoelscher who scored 16 points and Kyle Shumaker posted 11 points, but Wetmore fell to 2-10 on the year.

#3 Baileyville-B&B vs. #2 Onaga      (B&B won 64-40) 
 
Both teams looking for some momentum coming out of the TVL tournament after a tournament showing that neither team expected and it was the B&B Falcons picking up that momentum by winning 64-40 over Onaga. Buffalos worked to the early 13-10 lead after the first quarter but a 21-10 second quarter sent B&B into halftime with the 31-23 lead in the seventh place game. Falcons flew out to a nice start in the second half and stretched their lead out with a 18-9 third and cruised to the win with a 33-17 second half. With the win B&B improved to 7-5 on the year and was led by Luke Holthaus who scored 15 points, while Dylan Schmitz added 14 points and Cameron Haug scored 11 points. Onaga in the loss finish the tourney winless and now sit at 6-5 on the year. Jarod Gronewoller continued to lead the Buffalos scoring 13 points, while Wyatt Cordell chipped in 11 points in the loss.

#8 Axtell vs. #6 Troy     (Axtell won 51-41)
 
Four guys in double figures and balance led the Axtell Eagles to a 51-41 win and a fifth place finish this year in the TVL tournament as they took down Troy. Tied after the first quarter and only a two-point game at the half, Axtell used a 14-5 third quarter to take the reins of the game, but the Trojans hit some three's and made a push back in contest but it wasn't enough. Axtell with the win claimed fifth place and improved to 9-5 on the season as Derek Porting led the team with 14 points. Payton Heinen scored 12 points, Christian Buessing tallied 11 points and Tyler Jones added 10 points for the Axtell Eagles. Troy with the loss fell to 8-5 on the season and was led by Tristan Speer who scored 11 points, while Jake Ross chipped in 10 points.

#7 Linn vs. #1 Valley Heights     (Valley Heights won 53-40)
 
Fast start by the Valley Heights Mustangs gave them the lead early against Linn and the Bulldogs answered with a run of their own to trail only by four at the end of the first quarter but a 13-6 second quarter gave the Mustangs a 11 point lead at the half. Mustangs took home third place in the tournament with a 53-40 win over Linn, improving to 10-2 on the year. Valley Heights was led by Gage Woodyard who scored 13 points, Elijah Smith posted 12 points and Charles Musil added 11 points. Linn fell to 7-5 on the season with the loss and was led by Josh Meyer who scored 11 points.
 
Championship
 
#5 Hanover vs. #3 Centralia    (Hanover won 61-57) 
 
Hanover Wildcats won their fourth TVL tournament title in school history and fourth in the last six years by taking Centralia down 61-57. Panthers led 11-9 after the first quarter, but a 9-0 start to the second quarter by Hanover gave the Wildcats the lead that they would never give up. Wildcats worked themselves to a 34-25 lead at the half after a 25-14 second quarter. Centralia made this interesting clawing back into the game and pulling to within one-point late in the game but ultimately came up short having shots to tie the game and win it. Hanover with the win moved to 10-3 on the season and was led by Hunter Nicholson who scored 12 points, while Wade Steinfort chipped in 10 points and three others scored eight points each. Centralia with the loss falls to 9-3 on the year and was led by Sam Steinlage who posted 27 points, while Brett Burdiek scored 14 points.
