Hiawatha Girls Invite Day 1 Recap

37th Annual Hiawatha Invitational Tournament as day one action including three lopsided wins and the top four seeds all moved into the winners bracket on Tuesday at the Roundhouse.

#3 Nemaha Valley 48, Jackson Heighs 23
The Lady Raiders jumped to a 19-4 lead and went up 32-8 at halftime as Jackson Heights struggled to take care of the basketball and committed 21 turnovers in the first half.  Jaci Swart scored 9 of her 14 points in the first half for Nemaha Valley while Madison Koch added 10 points and Rachel Baumgartner chipped in 9 and Melissa Nordhus hit two of the four treys for the Raiders to score 6.  NV improved to 8-3 with their fourth straight win as they look to defend their HIT Title from a year ago.  Payton Thomas had 6 points and Jessica Keehn 5 for the Cobras who are now 4-8.

#2 Horton 51, Rock Creek 38
The Chargers, like Nemaha Valley, jumped to an 8-0 lead and went ahead 21-14 at halftime.  Rock Creek had the lead down 25-23 in the third quarter before Horton went on a 7-1 run to put the game away and led by 16 in the fourth quarter.  Sarah Coversup had 17 for the Chargers and Loagan Rodvelt added 11 as Horton improved to 7-3.  Kelly Lehew, Keeley Cowley and Amber Wilhelm all had 6 for Horton who will try to avenge a 51-33 loss to NV (1-24-14) in the 8:00 semifinal game on Thursday night.  Rock Creek, a team without a senior, is now 1-8 on the season after getting 8 points each from Jacy Johnston and Morgan Feldkamp and will play Jackson Heights at 5:00 PM on Thursday. 

#1 Marysville 67, Riverside 27
Marysville led 19-4 early in the game and scored 29 points in the first quarter befor taking a 47-19 lead into the locker room.  10 of the 12 Bulldogs scored and the starters did not play in the final quarter.  Rachel Heiman had 15 for Marysville, Tristan Wicks 11 and Abi Degenhardt added 8 as Marysville improved to 9-2. Riverside remains winless despite an 11 points game from Erica Halter. 

# 4 Falls City 55, Hiawatha 51
Hiawatha had beaten Falls City by six points early in the season and led throughout the first three quarters of a tight game on Tuesday night.  The Hawks were up 12-11 after one and 23-21 at halftime before taking a 39-35 margin into the final frame.  The Tigers had struggled behind the arc but got key trifecta's from Brooke Scheitel and Sydney Armbruster in the final minutes to take four points leads.  Falls City then made 10 of 15 free throws in the fourth quarter and 21 of 32 total in the game to hold on for the win.  Baylee Vrtiska scored 15 of her 20 points in the first half to keep the Tigers alive while Scheitel added 13 and hit 10 fo 14 free throws.  Madison Olberding chipped in 10 as Falls City improved to 8-10 and will rematch against Marysville in the  6:30 semifinal on Thursday.  (Marysville beat Falls City 47-39 in December this year.)  Hiawatha got 22 points from Emily Gartner and 10 by Molly Kettler, who hit a pair of three's early in the game to push Hiawatha to a lead by as many as 7 points.  Hiawatha missed 16 free throws and had 16 turnovers but had the ball trailing 53-51 with :18 left.  Gartner missed a long trey and even after a pair of offensive rebounds, the Redhawks could not hit a bucket to extend the game as Falls City made two late free throws to seal the win with :02 left.  Hiawatha is now 4-7 overall and will play Riverside in the 3:30 consolation game on Thursday.
