Holton Takes First While Royal Valley & Jeff West Place in Top 10 at Baldwin Wrestling Invite

After a snowing night in much of Northeast Kansas a few area teams headed to Baldwin on Saturday to hit the mats for action at the Baldwin Invitational. Holton, Royal Valley and Jeff West all put together great performances on the mats all finishing in the top 10 of the 16 teams competing on the day.

Holton Wildcats continued their strong season by notching another first place showing on the mats behind posting 212 points, which was 11 points better than second place on the day. Wildcats were led by three first place showing, a second place, three third place finishes and four other top eight finishes. The Royal Valley Panthers were led by a second place performance and took home eighth place as a team, while Jeff West had an individual champion on the day and finished tied for ninth as a team.

The number Class 4A team in Holton was paced on the day by a trio of first place performances as Jonah Lutz (132lbs), Justin Rieschick (138lbs) and Lucas Lovvorn (152lbs) each posted 4-0 records on the day. Lutz registered a pair of pinfall wins in his first two matches in two and 4:16 minutes, and then won via a 7-1 decision before closing out the day with a 5-1 decision win in the championship bout. Rieschick like Lutz won his first two matches by pinfall, while closing the day with decision victories of 9-7 and 5-1 in the championship bout. Lovvorn earned a bye in the first round and then posted a win by fall in 1:26, while finishing the day with a 1-0 decision win and 3-0 decision win in the championship bout.

Wildcats second ranked 285lbs grappler, Cooper Zeller took home second place with his only loss coming in the championship bout to the number one 4A wrestler from Jeff West in unbeaten Justin Scott, as Scott won with a 6-2 decision. Zeller finished the day with a 3-1 record.

Tyler Price (120lbs), Kyle Mick (182lbs) and Clayton Folk (195lbs) all finished third place posting 4-1 records. Price topped Royal Valley Panther, Austin Ashley in the third place match by a 6-2 decision, while Mick beat Jeff West Tiger, Josiah Dowding in his third place match with a 3-0 decision. Folk like Mick won his third place match by a 3-0 decision.

Four other Wildcats notched top eight finishes with Justin Pool (126lbs) and Bradley Hooper (220lbs) each placing fourth, Mason Baum (170lbs) taking fifth place and Spencer Baum (145lbs) finishing eighth.

The Royal Valley Panthers on the day were led by Chance Ogden (170lbs) who took home second place going 3-1 on the day. Ogden started the day with a 27 second pinfall win, then won with a pinfall in 2:30 and won via a 4-3 decision to make the championship bout. In the championship Ogden fell by a 5-1 decision.

Charles Todd (285lbs), Bryce Golightley (145lbs) and Austin Ashley (120lbs) all posted at least three wins on the day on their way to fourth place showing at the BIT; while Jerry Coan (113lbs) and Pallas Tye (126lbs) each place sixth on the day. Jonathan Frederick-Munsell (152lbs) took home a seventh place showing on the day.

Jeff West Tigers were led by 285lbs number one 4A wrestler in the state in Justin Scott who remained unbeaten on the season going 4-0 on the day. Scott continued win games by fall posting pinfall wins of 34, 11 and 57 seconds in his first three matches of the day. Scott wrapped up the day by topping Holton's Cooper Zeller with a 6-2 decision to grab the title.

Josiah Dowding (182lbs) finished with the second best day for the Tigers taking home a fourth place finish at his weight class. Tucker Schreiner (120lbs) and Jesse Best (145lbs) each placed sixth on the day, while Nathan Holloman (126lbs) finished seventh place and Jace Holmes (160lbs) and Sam Shenk (195lbs) both took home eighth place.

The Big Seven league was represented well on Saturday on the mats as the Holton Wildcats continued their strong season and the Royal Valley Panthers and Jeff West Tigers each posted great performances, also.
