Highland Sports Have Action Packed Weekend -- Roundup of Action Feb. 21-23rd

It was an action packed weekend for Highland CC sports starting on Friday and going all the way through Sunday with the baseball, softball, men's and women's basketball and track and field teams in action.

Fourth Ranked HCC Scotties Softball Opens Season going 5-1 at Kilgore Tournament

The fourth ranked team in the Division II poll in Highland opened the softball season on the road in Texas at the Kilgore tournament and put together a strong showing finishing the action 5-1.

On Friday the Lady Scotties opened the season with a win over the host Kilgore 7-6, but followed that up with an 18-10 loss to Grayson, splitting their first two games of the year.

Looking to rebound from the loss the Scotties finished the tournament strong winning their final four games by outscoring their opponents 31-12. On Saturday Highland cruised past Kilgore winning 9-0, by out hitting Kilgore 11-1 in the competition as Taylor Hatfield highlighted the Scotties performances picking up the pitching win allowing just one hit and registering two hits with a homerun offensively. Emma Hill and Taylor Zimmerman added a two hit game each and Emily Clontz posted three RBI's.

Scotties wrapped up Saturday with a 8-3 win over Eastern Oklahoma State, which saw Taylor Phillips pick up the pitching win, while going 2-4 and Kaley Pyles led the Scotties offense with a 3-3 day with two runs, an RBI and homerun. Liz Belter registered four RBI and blasted a homerun.

Wrapping up the tournament on Sunday, Highland tallied a 7-3 win over Grayson and a 7-6 win over BPCC. In the victory over Grayson, Hatfield continue her strong start to the year going 3-3 with a run, four RBI's, a double, single and homerun, while pitching four innings. Holly Wilmarth added a 2-3 day with a run, two RBI's, a double and homerun.

In the win over BPCC, Highland was out-hit 12-10 and trailed 3-1 after the first inning but used a three-run third and two-run fourth to help earn them the win. Pyles, Hill, Wilmarth and Zimmerman all had two hits days in the competition.

Scotties started the season 5-1 and get back to action on the field with their home opener tomorrow versus Neosho County at 1:00pm.

HCC Baseball Goes 3-1 at Cloud County Tournament

Scotties opened the tournament with a pair of games on Friday and splitting those games with a 8-1 win over Cloud County and 4-2 loss to North Iowa Area. In the 8-1 win over Cloud County, Highland out-hit Cloud 8-3 and capitalized on five Cloud errors in the contest. Scotties opened the game with a four-run first and add one-run in the third and fourth, while posting two more in the fifth. Justin Paul had two hits and three RBI's to lead Highland in the win.

In the loss to North Iowa Area, Highland had the game tied at 2-2 after the fifth, but a two-run sixth by North Iowa Area gave them the win.

On Saturday, Highland cruised past Cloud County again this time 9-1 and avenged the lost to North Iowa Area winning 8-0. In the game against Cloud County Dakota Woods, Kasey Clark and Justin Paul all had multi-hit games, while Woods had two RBI's in the win. In the 8-0 win over the #8 Division II team, North Iowa Area, Skylar Barnes pitched himself to the win for the Scotties, striking out eight during the game. Aaron Steele led the Scotties offense with two hits, while Justin Wagner and Tyler Lane each posted two RBI's.

With the 3-1 performance at the Cloud County tournament the Scotties baseball team moved to 5-3 on the year and will gear up for action again on Thursday at Cowley CC at 2:00pm.

Highland Basketball Splits with Brown Mackie on the Road

Looking to bounce back from losses both Highland men and women headed to Brown Mackie College on Saturday to look to get back in the win column after losses to JCCC earlier in the week. The women got back into the win column with a 89-68 win, but the men fell 89-78 on the road.

In the women's competition it was the Scotties hot shooting that propelled them to the win as they shot 55.7% from the floor in the game and lead 38-25 to cruise to the win, 89-68. Four players scored in double figures for the Lady Scotties led by Julia Alves who posted 20 points. India Johnson added 12 points, while Ashley Torres scored 11 points and Shamirah Johnson added 10 points for the Scotties.

In the men's competition the Scotties found themselves only down 36-33 at the half, but Brown Mackie separated themselves in the second half for the 86-78 win. Highland in the loss was led by Dominque Davis who scored 32 points, while Robel Teckle and Torre Sommerville each scored 11 points.

Scotties wrap up the regular season with a matchup on Wednesday at home versus Hesston at 5:00pm the women get things started.

Scotties headed to Lawrence over the weekend to square off with fellow KJCCC teams in the Region VI Indoor Track & Field Championships and came home with 15 Top 10 performances.

As a team the Scotties finished 12th on the women’s side and 11th on the men's out of 13 teams, but there were plenty of top flight individual performances during the competition.

Leading the way was Mandy Wilson as she took home the lone first place showing winning the 600 meter run with a time of 1:41.46. Krystal Corhn took home third place in the 60 meter dash behind a time of 7.74, while five other Highland Lady Scotties took home top 10 showings. Crystal Hoard and Taylor Smith-Brown each finished fifth in the 1000 meter run (3:16.73) and high jump (1.51m), respectively. Rebecca Geib posted a sixth place showing in the one-mile run, while Bailey Munger and Jasmine Miller each took home a tenth place performance in the high jump (1.45m) and 400 meter dash (1:02.76).

On the men's side of competition it was Tyus Jacob registering the best showing in an event taking third place in the 400 meter dash with a time of 49.75. Steven Hill took home fourth place for the Scotties in the triple jump with a leap of 14.47m. While former Horton Charger, Jacob Lott placed fifth in the shot put (14.82m) and eighth in the weight throw (13.20m).

Other individual top 10 showings for the Highland men came from Rey Quinones-Velez who placed ninth in the 1000 meter run (2:40.58) and Brian Martinez who placed tenth in the 5000 meter run (16:20.67).

The men's relay teams took home two ninth place finishes and a sixth place for the Scotties. The sixth place came in the men's distance medley with the team of Clayton Stoppkotte, Dalton Rickets, Tyus Jacob and Quinones-Velez (11:09.00). In the 4x400 meter relay it was the team of Jacob, Kooper Winterscheidt, Trevon Constant and Stoppkotte placing ninth (3:28.28), while in the 4x800 meter relay it was Quinones-Velez, Stoppkotte, Constant and Carlos Gonzalez-Tabres taking ninth (8:30.87).

The NJCCA National Indoor Track & Field competition is set for March 7-8th in New York at Monroe College.
