Valley Heights Runs Past Axtell for Sweep On the Road

The regular season wrapped up on Tuesday night for the Axtell Eagles and Valley Heights Mustangs as they squared off in a league showdown with plenty on the line for both teams in the league standings and momentum going into postseason play. At the end of the night it was Valley Heights leaving with the sweep taking down Axtell 57-35 in the girl’s game and 60-44 in the boy’s game.

Night started with Axtell girls establishing an 11-6 lead in the first quarter over Valley Heights but the Mustangs closed the quarter out on a 4-0 run to draw within one and then took over in the second quarter with a 17-5 frame to lead 27-16 at the half.

The lead continued to grow for Valley Heights in the second half as they posted a 16-7 third quarter behind the stellar shooting of junior, Sidney Blackburn and sophomore, Brandi Jo Roepke who finished with 23 and 22 points, respectively on the night, helping the Mustangs earn the 57-35 win.

Both Blackburn and Roepke each posted 10 points in the first half and continued that great play getting plenty of buckets inside the paint for the Mustangs, to help them cap of an unbeaten TVL regular season record at 13-0. Blackburn with her performance earned Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on KMZA. Mustangs overall on the season improved to 19-1 on the year with the win and stretched their winning streak to 11.

With the loss Axtell fell to 13-8 on the season and wrapped up the regular season four wins better than last year's final record and finished fifth in the league. Kiersten Talbot paced the Eagles on the night with 11 points, while Courtney Heinen chipped in nine points.

In the boy’s competition, Valley Heights got off to a quick 6-0 start and never trailed in the ball game leading 27-21 at the half and stretching that lead to double figures in the second half to earn the 60-44 win over Axtell.

Senior, Charles Musil started the game off in dominant fashion scoring 10 of the Mustangs first 19 points and finishing with a new season high of 21 points. Gage Woodyard joined in him double figures as he followed up his 21 point showing against Blue Valley-Randolph with an 18 point game against Axtell and earned Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on KMZA. Junior, Elijah Smith chipped in 13 points for Valley Heights, as he went 6-6 from the free throw line.

With the win the Mustangs improved to 18-2 in the season and earned the regular season TVL title going 12-1 in league play.

For the Axtell Eagles they were led by Christian Buessing who scored 11 points on the night, while Tyler Jones tallied 10, as Axtell fell to 12-9 on the season with the loss.

Both teams now turn their attention to Sub-State action next week and both will not play again until at least next Thursday, March 6th.
