Horton Chargers Top Wetmore Cardinals Earning Sweep at Home

On Thursday the Horton Chargers played host to the Wetmore Cardinals and on senior night for Horton as they charged to the sweep earning a 47-40 win in the girl’s matchup and 71-47 win in the boys contest.

Night started with the Wetmore Cardinals girls stymying the Horton defense early and notching a 12-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Chargers worked themselves into some early foul trouble and neither team found a groove offensively in the second quarter but Horton held Wetmore without a field goal in the frame and lead 20-15 at the half behind a 10-3 second quarter.

The second half Chargers came out the gate strong and the junior, Sarah Coversup took over inside as she posted 13 of the teams 19 points in the quarter as Horton pushed their lead to a 39-21 margin holding the Cardinals to six points in the third quarter. Wetmore pushed back in the fourth with a 19-8 quarter to get back into the game but it was ultimately too late as Horton earned the 47-40 win.

Coversup led the Chargers with 21 points on the night to earn the Citizen's State Bank "Player to Bank On" honors from KNZA, while Mariah Hisle and Amber Wilhelm each posted six points. Horton with the win moved to 15-4 on the season.

Wetmore with the loss fell to 8-13 on the year and was led by a duo in double figures with Corinne Haverkamp scoring 12 points, while Keri Pfrang chipped in 10 points. Pfrang with her 10 points and toughest in the game earned Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors from KMZA.

In the boys contest Wetmore started the scoring with an early three-pointer, then it was tied at 5-5 apiece, before Horton took control of the game with a 6-0 run to lead 11-6, when Wetmore called a timeout. Out of the timeout things continued to roll for Horton to nailed 5-8 three-pointers in the first half (finishing 5-14 from three-point land); the Chargers pushed their lead to 37-21 at the half.

The lead continued to stretch in the second half as Wetmore did their best to make pushes but ultimately Horton pounded the inside in the second half to send them to the 71-47 win.

Horton with the win moved to 13-6 on the season and was led by Dakota Bayles who scored 21 points, earning the Citizens State Bank "Player to Bank On" honors from KNZA. While, Josh Allen chipped in 15 points and Trey Dishon tallied 11 points.

Wetmore with the loss fell to 3-17 on the season and was led by Kyle Shumaker who posted 14 points on the night, hitting three three-pointers. Shumaker's performance earned him Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors from KMZA. Jeremy Hoelscher chipped in 13 points on the night.

For Horton they turn their attention to one final regular season game at Doniphan West on Friday night, while Wetmore gears up for Sub-State starting next week.
