Free throws and defense was the recipe for success for the Maur Hill Mount Academy Ravens on Monday. MH-MA pulled away in the fourth quarter and defeated Hiawatha 61-52 in the first round of Class 3A Sub-State at Horton.

Before the game started, the matchup featured two defensive-minded squads. That’s what the first half exactly showed. Hiawatha had the edge after the opening frame, up 10-9 and finished the first half leading 19-17. The rim opened up in the second half as both teams combined for 41 points in the third quarter. A three at the buzzer by Hiawatha senior Parker Hasenkamp put the Red Hawks ahead 39-38. Maur Hill Mount Academy started the final quarter on a 9-2 run and extended the lead out to as much as 12. Ravens cruised from there to win 61-52.

Junior Dillon Kramer paced the Ravens with 18 points, but it was junior Jake Schmidt that made the difference in the second half. Schmidt played tough defense and scored all of his 12 points in the second half to be the Bank of Atchison Player of the Game.

Hiawatha’s Conner Bigham left everything on the court when he walked out of the gym. The senior rocketed past his previous season-high of 22 points by scoring 27 to lead the Red Hawks. Junior Greg Lock chipped in 11 off the bench.

Maur Hill Mount Academy improved to 13-8 and takes on undefeated Sabetha at Horton on Thursday at six o’clock. Live coverage can be heard on KNZA 103.9 FM. For Hiawatha, the Red Hawks ended the season at 8-13.
