Valley Heights & Linn Girls Move on to 1A-DI Sub-State Championship

Four Twin Valley League girls teams meet up on Friday night to move one win away from a bid into the 1A-Division I State tournament in Emporia. Centralia and Linn squared off in one semifinal and Valley Heights the host of the sub-state took on Hanover in the other semifinal.

At the end of the night the two and one seed prevailed but it wasn't easy, as Linn the two seed came from behind to top Centralia 49-43 and Valley Heights battle Hanover holding on for the two-point win, 52-50.

The night started off with Centralia on fire against Linn getting off to a quick start as Panther junior, Liz Hasenkamp drained four three-pointers and scored 12 of the teams 16 points in the first quarter to give Centralia the 16-11 lead at the end of the first period. The lead dwindled down to two at the half with Centralia up 24-22, but in foul trouble with their post players.

Second half started off and the Linn Bulldogs pushed ahead of Centralia using a 14-6 third quarter to lead by six a margin they would go on to win by with a score of 49-43 as Centralia got in foul trouble more and cooled off offensively in the game.

The Panthers saw their season come to a close with the loss wrapping up the season 13-10, with Amaris Jones leading the way with 18 points on the night, to earn the Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on KMZA. Hasenkamp finished with 14 points, but only had one bucket after her 12 point first quarter.

For Linn they moved on to the Sub-State championship game with the win and improved to 16-5 on the season. Junior, Kesiah Thalman paced Linn with 16 points, while Nicole Ohlde added 10 points.

Joining Linn in the Sub-State championship is the host of the sub-state action Valley Heights has the Mustangs held on for the 52-50 win.

Hanover Wildcats and Valley Heights traded blows back and forth throughout the first half with Hanover leading 8-7 after the first quarter and the game was tied late in the second quarter when Valley Heights', Cassidy Coggins drained a three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Mustangs the 20-17 lead at the half.

Mustangs picked up the offense in the second half outscoring Hanover 19-6 in the third quarter to lead by double figures a good portion of the second half but Hanover wasn't going away quietly. The Wildcats chipped their way back into the game earned some free throws and then late in the fourth started to drain three's drawing within one-point. Senior, Lesley Frohberg split a pair of free throws late in the game to give Valley Heights the two-point lead and Hanover had a shot to win it but was unable to hoist up a look as the clock expired.

Hanover ends their season with a 12-11 record and was led by Paige Doebele who scored 18 points, while Riley Doebele chipped in 16 points, as Hanover hit seven three-pointers in the game.

Valley Heights with the win improves to 21-1 on the season and was led by a trio of players in double figures with Brandi Jo Roepke scoring 14 points, Sidney Blackburn adding 13 points and Lesley Frohberg scoring 12 points. Frohberg's performance and leadership earned her Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on KMZA.

The 1A-DI Valley Heights girl’s sub-state championship is set with Valley Heights taking on Linn, Saturday night in Blue Rapids at 6:00pm.
