Twin Valley League Hands Out All-League Basketball Honors

Another year another State Championship by a team in the Twin Valley League in basketball as a team from the TVL has won a state title five of the last six years, the previous four were won by boy’s teams this year a girl’s squad won a title.

The year overall saw seven league teams make State and five of them earned a third place of better performance. B&B lady Falcons led the way winning the 1A-DII state title, Valley Heights girl’s took home second place in 1A-DI, while Washington County girls in 2A, Valley Heights boys in 1A-DI and B&B boys in 1A-DII all took home third place finishes.

After a great year in the league the All-League honors have been handed out with every team earning at least one player on the All-League first or second team.

Both Valley Heights and Centralia had the most All-League selections with five players selected for between the boys and girls honors.

For the Mustangs after a pair of banner years in which the girls finished 24-2 and second place in 1A-DI, while the boys were 23-3 and took third at State. For the girl Brandi Jo Roepke and Sidney Blackburn both earned first team All-League honors, while on the boys side both Charles Musil and Derek Trimble also were selected first team All-League. Gage Woodyard also earned All-League honors being selected to the second team.

The Centralia Panthers also had five players earn All-League honors after a 13-10 season for the girls and 17-7 year by the boys. First team All-League honors were earned by Centralia Panthers, Sam Steinlage, Brett Burdiek and Kaitlyn Koch, while second team honors went to Devin Rempe and Liz Hasenkamp.

Three TVL teams had four players earn All-League honors as B&B, Hanover and Washington County all placed four players on the All-League teams.

For the B&B Falcons in their final year as a school it was another chance to add to the Falcon legacy and that they did with a State title by the girls and a third place finish at State by the boys, finishing 24-3 and 19-8 on the season, respectively. All four players for the Falcons earned first team All-League honors as Laura Sudbeck, Katie Huerter, Ashley Kramer and Dustin Rottinghaus garnered those honors.

Both Washington County Tiger teams made the 2A State tournament with the girls taking home third place finishing 22-3 on the season and the boys wrapped up the year 14-9 with a State tournament appearance. For the girls both Erin Alexander and Heidi Stegman earned first team All-League honors, while Courtney Moore earned second team honors. Kyle McGatlin for the boys earned second team honors, also.

The Hanover Wildcats wrapped up their years finishing 19-4 and 12-11 for the boys and girls, respectively and earned four players on the All-League teams. Wade Steinfort earned first team All-League honors, while his teammates Austin Diederich and Andrew Bruna earned second team All-League honors, as did Paige Doebele for the girls.

Axtell Eagles, Frankfort Wildcats and Wetmore Cardinals each had three players earn All-League honors.

For Axtell whose both boys and girls teams saw their season come to a close in the sub-state championship, Kiersten Talbot and Payton Heinen earned first team All-League honors and Courtney Heinen was named to second team honors. Axtell girls finished the season 15-9 and the boys 14-10.

Frankfort who finished 4-17 in boys action and 5-16 in girls action had three players earn All-League honors; as Lucas Adams was named to the first team and Ashley Joseph and Arianna Martin both to the second team All-League teams.

Wetmore teams finished 4-18 for the boys and 9-14 for the girls this year and had three players earn All-League honors all being named to the second team. Brianna Boden on the girl’s side earned the honors, while Kyle Shumaker and Jeremy Hoelscher each earned the honors on the boy’s side.

Linn Bulldogs, Onaga Buffalos and Troy Trojans each had two players earn All-League honors each with one girl and boy earning those honors.

For Linn Nicole Ohlde and Josh Meyer both earned first team All-League honors after helping Linn to 16-6 and 12-9 records respectively for girls and boys.

Onaga Buffalos finished the season 10-11 and 4-17 for the boys and girls on the year and both Jocelyn Marten and Jarod Gronewoller each earned second team All-League honors.

After competing in the TVL for the first time this year the Troy Trojans finished 8-14 and 13-10 for the girls and boys, respectively and had Alanie Stock and Collin Jasper both earn second team All-League honors.

Doniphan West, Clifton-Clyde and Blue Valley-Randolph each had one player named to the All-League teams. For Doniphan West Payton Leach earned second team’s honors after helping the Mustangs to an 11-10 record. Clifton-Clyde’s Caleb Gelino earned first team All-League honors after helping Clifton-Clyde to the state tournament this year with the team finishing 9-14 on the year. Blue Valley-Randolph wrapped up the year 6-16 and Zach Rootring earned second team honors.

The Twin Valley League experience change with the addition of Troy and Doniphan to move the league to 14 teams and just make it even stronger as the league produced a State champ, State runner-up and three third place finishers at State.
