Big Seven League Basketball All-League Honors Announced

It was another great year and battle in the Big Seven that saw five teams compete in the State tournament with three third place showings and a State championship as well.

With another year in the books All-League honors have been handed out in the Big Seven.  

The Sabetha Bluejays led the All-League with six players earning honors from the boys and girls teams combined. After a 22-1 season, perfect 13-0 league record and outright Big Seven title the Bluejays saw Gaven Schuman, Jacob Frey and Kellen Russell all were named to the Big Seven All-League squad. While the ladies finished the year 16-6 and 12-1 in the league sharing the title with Santa Fe Trail but beat the Chargers during the season. Alexis McAfee was named to the Big Seven All-League honors, while her teammates Taryn Schuette and Ellie Montgomery both earned honorable mention honors.

Nemaha Valley Raiders had the second most All-League honors picked up in the Big Seven after both teams took home third place finishes at the 3A state tournaments. The boys made their 7th straight appearance at State and finished the year 23-3. Leading the Raiders all year was the senior tandem of Justice McKernan and Caleb Meyer who both earned All-League honors, while three lady Raiders earned those honors too, as Jaci Swart, Kennedy McKernan and Rachael Baumgartner picked up the honors after a 21-5 season.

Five teams in the Big Seven had four athletes earn All-League or honorable mention honors this year in Santa Fe Trail, Holton, Royal Valley, Jeff West and Perry Lecompton.

Santa Fe Trail lady Chargers finished their final year in the Big Seven with a 22-3 record, shared league title with Sabetha and a 4A-DII State title. Pacing the Chargers on the year was Shelby Dahl and Amber Moore who both earned All-League honors, on the boys side Weston Gloss also earned All-League honors for Santa Fe Trail Chargers. Chase Logan for the Charger boys was named honorable mention, after the Chargers finished 6-15 this season.

The Holton Wildcats saw both their girls and boys make the State tournament this year and the girls capped off their season 17-8 and third at State, while the boys were 17-6 on the season. For the lady Wildcats, Emporia State commit, Kyrstie Miller earned All-League honors, while for the boys both Garett Beecher and Trey Tanking earned All-League honors. Sam Tanking also picked up honors named to honorable mention All-League.

Royal Valley Panthers saw both one girl and boy earn All-League honors and one each earn honorable mention honors, too. The Panthers boys wrapped up the year 10-12 and had Skyler Link earn All-League honors and Zach Rottinghaus honorable mention honors. While the girls finished 11-11 with Jaycee Worrell earning All-League honors and Elizabeth Blevins honorable mention honors.

Lady Tigers of Jeff West finished 5-16 this season and the Jeff West boys posted a 9-12 on the year and the boys earned three players with honorable mention honors, while the girls had one All-League player. Brent Roberts, Jacob Dickey and Alex Miller all were named honorable mention Big Seven, while Olivia Brees earned All-League honors.

For the Perry Lecompton Kaws the boys wrapped up the year 8-13 and the girls finished 10-11 on the season. The boys saw Zach Linquist earn All-League honors after his play on the court this season, while his teammate Seth Surface earned honorable mention honors. On the girls side honorable mention honors were picked up by both Madison Hess and Kai Jones.

The Hiawatha Red Hawks had a pair of All-League player’s one girl and boy after the girls and boys both finished 8-13 on the year. Emily Gartner and Conner Bigham both picked up All-League honors after leading their teams all season.

ACCHS Tigers had just one player earn league honors as Leah Scholz picked up honorable mention honors after the Tigers finished 8-13 this season.

Another great year of competition in the Big Seven League with the additions of Riverside and ACCHS this year, lead to many great performances at the State level and throughout the year. The Big Seven will set up for more change next year with the departure of Santa Fe Trail and league schedule going to full round-robin with home and home.
