Saturday night at 7:30 PM, the Highland CC women's basketball team will play for the National Championship of the KJCAA -Division 2 Tournament in Overland Park. The Lady Scotties, under the direction of Coach B.J. Smith and Jillian Palan, had a 30-2 record going into the National Tournament and have gone 3-0 this week to advance to the title game. HCC, the #4 seed will face #8 seed Mesa (AZ) who is 27-5 on the season at Johnson County Community College.
Highland made the National Tournament for the second year in a row by defeating Johnson County in the final game of the Region VI Tournament 54-52. The Scotties opened the tourney this week with a dominating 89-26 win on Tuesday against Essex County (NJ) as five HCC players scored in double figures, led by Celine Joliceur with 21. On Wednesday, HCC rallied from a six-point halftime defecit to thump Parkland (IL) 83-63 with Julia Alves scoring 28 points and adding 15 rebounds to pace the way. In the semifinals on Friday, Highland beat #6 St .Clair County (MI) 69-64 behind Holton sophomore, Ryann Bowser, who posted a game high 23 points with 8 rebounds and 5 steals to add with a couple blocks and assists.
