Marysville Girls & Washington County Boys Win Nemaha Valley Track Invite

As the regular season for spring sports heads to the final stretch nine area teams competed against each other with two more teams in Seneca for the Nemaha Valley Invitational in track and field action on Tuesday.

At the end of the day it was the Marysville girls and Washington County boys taking the top team honors at the Nemaha Valley Invitational.

For the girls Marysville took first followed by Sabetha in second and B&B took home third place as a team. The rest of the girls team finishes were: 4th - Nemaha Valley, 5th - Washington County, 6th - Rock Creek, 7th - Royal Valley, 8th - Axtell, 9th - Jackson Heights and 10th - Riverside. On the boys side of competition Washington County finished first as a team while Riverside took second place and Royal Valley finished third. The rest of the boys team finishes were: 4th - tie between Sabetha and Rock Creek, 6th - Nemaha Valley, 7th - Axtell, 8th - B&B, 9th - Jackson Heights, 10th - Marysville and 11th - Flint Hills Christian.

Marysville notched the most first place showings on the day all coming in the girl’s competition as they won eight events on their way to a first place team finish. The Bulldogs swept the relay competitions winning the 4x100 with a time of 51.55, the 4x400 behind a time of 4:13.02 and the 4x800 with a time of 10:31.56. Both Aubrie Peschel and Rachel Heiman each won two individual events for the Bulldogs on the track. Peschel paced her way to wins in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs with times of 5:58.00 and 12:53.59, while Heiman sprinted to wins in the 100 and 200 meter dashes with times of 12.65 and 25.80. Brcylin Alstrom added a first place, too as she claimed the gold in the 400 meter dash (1:01.05).

Washington County took home the second most first place finishes on the day just one behind Marysville with seven; five of which came from the boy’s side of competition, helping the Tigers take first as a team. Dylan Hodgson led the Tigers attack in the boy’s competition winning both the 1600 meter run (4:46.30) and the 3200 meter run (9:43.71). The three other gold medals by the Tigers boys track team came in the field events as Brett Herrs, Logan Kier and Kyle Egdar each won an event. Herrs and Kier both tossed her way to wins in the shot put (51'05) and discus (137'10), respectively, while Edgar won the long jump behind a leap of 20'06.25. On the girls side Erin Alexander posted both first place showings for the lady Tigers as she won the shot put (41'08) and discus (119'10.50).

The host Nemaha Valley Raiders took home four first place finishes on the day with three coming by one gal as Rachael Baumgartner swept the hurdles winning the 100 and 300 meter hurdles with times of 16.15 and 48.43, and took home gold in the pole vault with vault of 9'06. Isaac McWilliams took home the gold in the triple jump behind a leap of 44'08. 

Both Sabetha and Royal Valley each had three first place finishes earned by their competitors on the day at the Nemaha Valley Invitational.

For the Bluejays, Heidi Heiniger and Meagan Garrett each won a field event in the girl’s competition winning the javelin (132'02) and high jump (5'00), respectively. While on the boys side of competition Sabetha's 4x800 meter relay team posted a time of 8:55.37 to claim first place.

Royal Valley was led by Elizabeth Blevins, Gary Stauffer and Patrick Broxterman who all won events on the day. Blevins captured the gold in the triple jump with a leap of 35'01.50, while Stauffer won the javelin with a toss of 164'02 and Broxterman leapt to the win in the high jump with a leap of 6'04.

Axtell Eagles saw a pair of gold medal performances as Kiersten Talbot and Shane Talbot both registered first place finishes on the day. Kiersten raced to the win the 800 meter run (2:31.92), while Shane won the 400 meter dash (54.33).

Jackson Heights, B&B and Riverside all had one first place performance on the day at the Nemaha Valley Invitational. For the Cobras it was Seth Holliday taking first in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:04.65, while B&B Falcon, Trevor Heiman sprinted to the win in the 200 meter dash (22.42) and the Riverside Cyclones 4x400m relay team won the gold with a time of 3:36.86.
