Hiawatha Boys & Sabetha Girls Claim Sabetha Track Invitational Titles

Mother Nature looked like she would play a factor in more spring sports on Thursday but held off just enough for Sabetha to host their track invitational with six other area teams competing alongside the Bluejays.

At the end of the day it was two teams that have been putting together strong track seasons winning another team track meet title again, as the Hiawatha boys and the Sabetha girls both took home first place.

For the boys it was Hiawatha putting up 138 points to claim first place, finishing 10 points ahead of Centralia who placed second (128), while Nemaha Valley took third place as a team with 110 points. The rest of the team finishes were: 4th - Sabetha, 5th - Valley Falls, 6th - Marysville and 7th - Horton.

In the girls competition Sabetha amassed 157 points to win the track meet by 22 points, as Marysville took second place with 135 points and Nemaha Valley finished third as a team with 97 points. The rest of the team finishes were: 4th - Hiawatha, 5th - Centralia, 6th - Horton and 7th - Valley Falls.

At the end of the day it was Hiawatha coming away with the most first place finishes in the individual competitions as 11 events were won by the Red Hawks. Multiple Red Hawk competitions won multiple events on the day including, as Conner Bigham led the Red Hawks in the boys competition. Bigham raced his way to the win in the 800 meter run (2:05.12), while leaping his way to the win in the high jump (6'4) and on top of those gold medals Bigham partnered with his teammates to claim gold in the 4x400 and 4x800 meter relays. The 4x400 team of Bigham, Ryker Smith, Brendan Steele and Justin Sprick posted a time of 3:40.64 to claim first place, while the 4x800 quartet of Bigham, Brandt Houk, Smith and Steele took first behind a time of 8:41.32. Steele also won the 400 meter dash (53.37) on top of competing on both relay teams for the Red Hawks. For the boys the first place finishes didn't stop there as Quentin Overdick continued his strong year winning both the discus (160'03) and javelin (155'02).

The Hiawatha girls posted four first place finishes on the day with three coming on the track. Jordan Puvogel paced her way to wins in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs behind times of 5:37.50 and 12:14.89, while teaming up with Emily Bauer, Courtney Brockhoff and Molly Kettler to win the 4x800 meter relay with a time of 10:15.87. Emily Gartner also claimed a first place finish for the Red Hawk tossing her way to the win in the discus with a toss of 138'01.

The host Sabetha Bluejays earned seven first place finishes on the day with five on the girls side helping them grab first place as a team. Four of the five first place finishes by the Sabetha girls were in the field events by four different competitors. Courtney Plattner, Kelli Stallbaumer and Meagan Garrett all leapt their way to wins in the long jump (16'05), triple jump (33'08) and the high jump (5'02), respectively. While, Heidi Heiniger registered another gold medal performance this season winning the javelin with a toss of 143'09. Sabetha boys were led by Keegan Cox and their Throwers relay team who both won events. Cox raced his way to the win in the 3200 meter run with a time of 10:37.39, while the group of Taylor Meyer, Alec Kirwan, Jacob Leuthold and Eric Renyer won the Throwers relay with a time of 51.62.

Centralia, Nemaha Valley and Marysville all finished the day with six first place finishes on the day at the Sabetha Invitational.

For the Panthers all six first place finishes were earned on the boy’s side of competition. Four of the six came on the track as both Darrian Turner and Wyatt VanDorn sprinted to wins in the 100 and 200 meter dashes, respectively with times of 11.08 and 23.03. Brett Burdiek took home gold in the 110 meter hurdles (45.06), while teaming up with Turner, VanDorn and JT Rosine to win the 4x100 meter relay with a time of 44.34. The remaining two gold medal performances for Centralia came in the field events as Sam Steinlage and Cody Huerter won the long jump (21'01) and pole vault (12'06), respectively.

Nemaha Valley had half of their six first place finishes on the day earned by one competitor as Rachael Baumgartner continued her strong track season winning the 100 and 300 meter hurdles with times of 16.48 and 48.33, while adding the gold in the pole vault (9'0) also on the day. Michaela Stallbaumer, Zach Bradley and Issac McWilliams each added a first place showing to the day for the Raiders. Stallbaumer tossed her way to the win in the shot put (35'07.50), Bradley won the 300 meter hurdles (45.06) and McWilliams took home the triple jump crown (43'01).

Marysville Bulldogs had five of their six top flight performances on the day come in the girls competition, while all five coming on the track. Rachel Heiman sprinted her way to a pair of gold medals winning the 100 and 200 meter dashes with times of 12.62 and 26.42, while also running on the gold medal winning 4x100 and 4x400 Bulldog relay teams. Heiman teamed with Cheyenne Seematter, Chole Cudney and Claire Cudney to post a time of 51.04 to win the 4x100 relay, while Heiman and Seematter than raced with Bryclin Alstrom and Ally Kort to win the 4x400 relay behind a time of 4:16.98. Alstrom added another gold to her day by winning the 400 meter dash (1:01.95), also. Joe Smith took home the lone boys first place finish for the Bulldogs as he raced to the win in the 1600 meter run (4:45.53).

Horton Chargers also recorded a pair of first place finishes at the Sabetha Invitational as Trey Dishon won the shot put (47'0) and the girls Throwers relay team won gold with a time of 1:04.36. Melissa King, Makayla Miller, Kylie Gabbard and Carissa Lowe made up the gold medal Chargers Throwers relay team.
