Jefferson County North Girls & Maur Hill-Mount Academy Boys Win NEKL Track Titles

In its first year as an official league the Northeast Kansas League saw the Jefferson County North girls and the Maur Hill-Mount Acadmey boys take home league track titles, topping their fellow eight other league schools.

The girl’s competition saw the JCN lady Chargers claim first place after posting 176 total points finishing 84 points ahead of second place, as the lady Chargers won seven events on the day. Pleasant Ridge Rams took home second place finishing 30 points ahead of third place, which went to Maur Hill. The rest of the team finishes were: 4th - Jackson Heights, 5th - McLouth, 6th - Valley Falls, 7th - Oskaloosa, 8th - Horton and 9th - Immaculata.

Boy’s side of competition didn't feature as big of a gap between first and second place but the Maur Hill-Mount Academy Ravens took first place behind 132 points, winning the league title by 41 points. Pleasant Ridge boys like the girls took home second place, while JCN boys grabbed third place. The rest of the team finishes were: 4th - McLouth, 5th - Jackson Heights, 6th - Valley Falls, 7th - Horton, 8th - Oskaloosa and 9th - Immaculata.

All nine schools had at least one first place finisher on the day with JCN leading the way as nine first place finishes were earned. Seven of the nine first place Chargers performances were in the girl’s competition helping them take home the League title. It was the lady Chargers relay teams that paced the way as they swept all three relays winning the 4x100 with a time of 53.25, the 4x400 behind a time of 4:29.50 and the 4x800 by posting a time of 11:44.31. Jamie Navinskey put together a strong individual day by winning the 100 meter dash (12.44) and the long jump (17'02), while her teammates, Heather Polson and Laramie Leakey each won field events taking first in the high jump (5'02) and pole vault (10'02), respectively. On the boys side of competition it was Luke Pyle and Ty Brickell coming up gold medals winning the javelin (161'03) and the pole vault (9'00), respectively.

McLouth Bulldogs took home the second most gold medals on the day with six and were led by Drew Cerny who won three of those gold medals. Cerny sprinted his way to wins in the 100, 200 and 400 meter dashes posting times of 11.03, 22.65 and 52.12. The other two first place finishes for the Bulldogs also came on the track as Jack Arnett and Kayla Steffey won the 110 meter hurdles (17.13) and the 400 meter dash (1:03.62), respectively.

The Pleasant Ridge Rams posted five first place performances helping both their boys and girls team place second on the day. In the boy’s competition, the 4x100 meter relay team posted a time of 45.44 to win gold, while Tony Weber paced his way to the win in the 1600 meter run (4:48.84) and Matt Smith leapt his way to the win in the long jump (19'00). For the lady Rams, Oleta McCaully and Kristina Silvers each won events, notching gold's in the javelin (99'08) and 3200 meter run (12:57.06), respectively.

Maur Hill took home four first place finishes with three by the boys on their way to a League championship. Ravens 4x400 and 4x800 meter relay teams recorded times of 3:40.31 and 9:02.75, respectively to win gold, while Nick Caudle also won gold for the Ravens winning the triple jump (41'05.25). The lone first place by a lady Raven came at the hands of Avery Lewman who won the 800 meter run behind a time of 2:39.78.

Horton Chargers were the only other NEKL team to register multiple first place finishes on the day as Trey Dishon took home gold in both the discus (141'00) and shot put (51'01.50), while Carrissa Lowe won the girls shot put (33'00.50).

Valley Falls, Jackson Heights, Oskaloosa and Immaculata all had one athlete post a first place finish at the League meet. For the Dragons, Emily Nottingham took home the gold in the 200 meter dash, sprinting to time of 27.31, while Jackson Heights Cobra, Seth Holliday paced his way to the win in the 800 meter run behind a time of 2:06.19. Oskaloosa Bear, Madison Miller tossed her way to the win in the discus with a toss of 112'04, while Immaculata Raider, Jordan Sachse won the triple jump with a leap of 31'01.50.

Now with the regular season action in the book the Northeast Kansas League teams now turn their attention to Regionals coming on next Friday.
